Those Really Cool Novelty Ties

A cool guy wearing a Superman Tie
What kind of man would wear a Spiderman necktie?

Maybe he doesn't want to wear a tie but the boss said he has to or he isn't employed.  So he chooses to wear a tie that illustrates his interest in superheroes, or wildlife and that's the solution. Conversation or novelty ties are welcomed by men who  do not want to wear a traditional conservative necktie.  It is a means of being a fashion rebel or sorts.  To be individual - the man who just does not want to be a dressed like most other men.

For restaurants the food theme neckties like Tabasco Ties or coffee themes make the perfect uniform.  Maybe a young man would rather wear a Star Wars necktie to the prom to be different. Some guys will only wear certain themes which becomes a style trademark like sports themes that they are quite popular for being so consistent in such unique fashion accessorizing.  Women who work at the Cheese Cake Factory or IHop are required to wear ties and they’ll be very stylish with a Mickey Moose, Looney Tunes or maybe a Marilyn Monroe tie.  Believe it or not the right one will earn better tips.

and James Dean Tie

In the past these fun ties were easy to find.  J.C. Penny’s, Sears, and other department stores offered them as did specially retailers and mall kiosks.  Up until 2000 there was no problem finding neckties that were for the most part unusual.  That changed when the casual dress phenomenon caused the big department stores to cut back on neck wear as valuable shelf and floor space commanded much more popular apparel. Without the big chain retailers stocking inventory the manufacturers and designers just could not produce the collections that in many cases demanded royalties.  Then came the economic troubles of 2008 which caused great reservations in spending.  That was the final blow for the hold-outs which saw the end to almost all novelty theme neckties.

Now that they are collector items where does a man find the ties that they are so fond of.  The answer s the Internet as a few web retailers had made a niche for themselves and for now at least there are some sites with many novelty ties for sale.   Neckties are the number one Christmas gift for men and at least for many like teachers or a basketball coach, novelty neckties make a perfect gift.

A Really Super Novelty Necktie

vintage Superman neckties and pop-up display card
These vintage Superman neckties and pop-up
display card were made in in the 40's.
Superman - wear a Superman tie and be a reg'lar feller!

That's what the sales pitch was for this fantastic novelty tie more than 60 years ago..  This just may be the very first novelty tie made, at least it is the first superhero comics tie made.

These vintage Superman neckties and pop-up display card were made in in the 40's. These antique collector items were listed on Ebay the last week of September 2013 with the starting price of $229.00 or best offer and $399.99 or best offer.  This is not the first time I have seen this superhero tie listed on Ebay.  At least three times a seller has offered these classic ties for as much as $500.00 "buy it now " and when it went to auction the ending price on the other listing commanded $500.00.

George Reeves had just begun filming "The Adventures of Superman" when this beauty was being sold in stores. This is a vintage Superman necktie from 1951, in brand new, never worn condition, complete with its colorful display card packaging.

This D.C. Comics Superman tie is a collector item.  Even the more recent produced Superman neckties are considered collector items as they are no longer made.   When wearing one of these neckties you won’t need super hero strength to catch all of the attention at work or play.   If giving a gift to someone special who is a serious collector and loves comic books or is just a Superman fan then this could be the perfect gift.

I imagine that the retail price for the Superman necktie back in 1951 was $9.99.  It was available in navy and red for both men and boys.  Targeting the comic book fan this display card certainly had a prominent place on the counter next to the register of comic book shops - point of purchase at its best.   A prior post Super Superman Ties

Diane Nelson, president of DC Entertainment called Superman "Undeniably the greatest super hero in the world and likely the most influential comic book character of all rime."

In June 1938 the creators of Superman Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster saw their superhero on the cover of Action Comics First Issue debut.  That makes this year the 75th anniversary of the "Man of Steel" a monumental event for sure.

The release of the summer blockbuster Man the latest action packed movie is a tribute to Superman's humble beginnings as first a comic book character published by Detective Comics, two feature films in 1948 and 1950, and then radio, In 1952 a very popular television series of 104 episodes featured George Reeves, and in 1966 a Broadway Musical which was reproduced for television in 1975.

A cartoon series on TV from 1966 through 1969, and from 1973 through 1984 greatly added to Superman's popularity,  A ground breaking movie in 1978  featuring Christopher Reeve saw a comic book character capture an audience on the big screen which was followed by 3 sequels. The success of Superman a comic book character adapted to feature films gave birth to a series of Batman films and as well an ongoing series of many Marvel Comics feature films; Spiderman, Xmen, the Hulk, and Iron Man.

Hey Nice Tie

Cheryl Cole - Image from www.mrnicetie.co.uk/.
 "Hey nice tie,"
If you wear ties then you have heard this before. If you do not wear ties then obviously you have not heard this before and you should read this.  Regardless, this is kind of funny and worth reading.

What does such a compliment mean?  What is the person really telling you when you hear that you have good taste in neckties, from strangers or even friends? The real intentions of this flattery depends on what tie you are wearing, a fashion or novelty necktie, who you are, where you are, and who the person is who is paying the compliment. After all, people can tend to lie, or at least be less than honest when saying such things. How many times is someone really having a great day when asked. "how is it going?" or "how are you?" and their reply is "great!" Most of the time the answer is not the real truth or even close as most people will not be comfortable saying "I am having a horrible day," That is private stuff especially if there is gossip that become part of your personal world or possibly just the easiest answer to avoid conversation with a someone of no interest.  Men may exclaim to a woman how pretty she looks just to be polite. A woman may tell a co-worker at work, especially a man how handsome he looks, hoping to get a raise.  And men and women do not always tell the truth when asked if they are married as that could discourage some advances from a woman towards a man or completely ditch the chance of a man looking for some quick intimate company for one night.   Then, of course, one the biggest lies of all, "the check is in the mail."

Now that we have established that people can be less than honest in conversation - especially in casual or brief encounters the necktie comment can be fully understood. Here are several possible truths of what the "hey nice tie," compliment really means.

The person actually is being very cordial and is fond of your necktie.

The person is lying and thinks that you tie sucks and you actually have the worst taste in fashion in the world and he is laughing at you a second after he is out of view.

The person really likes your tie because your wearing a novelty necktie that has Darth Vader or Spiderman on it and in their eyes you are the coolest guy in the world.

The person hates neckties, and has made a fool of you in front of his pals or maybe your pals who may not be wearing ties.

The person is trying to distract you so he can steal your briefcase, pick your pocket, or mug you.

The person is kissing up to you because you are his boss and he or she wants a day off.

The person is trying to impress his friends or maybe his girlfriend that he is fashion wise and a polite gentleman, even he he isn't.

Hey missie. Nice tie - found on Flickr
The person is a friend or a co-worker and about to ask you for a loan.

The person is a pan-handler softening you up for a handout.

The person is a woman and she is picking you up for sex.

The person is a man and he is picking you up for sex.

The person is a man dressed as a women and he-she is picking you up for sex.

The person is a prostitute and she or he is about to proposition you for sex that you will have to pay for.

The person is your wife and you have become suspicious about her, so she is trying to change the subject because she is not going shopping, she is being unfaithful and about to meet her lover.

The person is trying to sell you something - like more neckties. ( which I will be honest here - was something that I did thousands of times selling ties to car salesmen or to guys walking past my tie cart Too Sexie Ties at the Irvine Spectrum center ).

This is an example of one of those golden rules to follow, that we have all learned already. Surely this scenario falls into the category entitled,  Do Not Believe Everything You Read, See or Hear.  That applies to everything, and everyone even - men's neckties.

I found the image above of Cheryl Cole wearing a red necktie along with a real treasure for necktie guys at Mr. Nice Tie - "every guy needs one"

Male Horse Fly Mating Techniques

Reaching speeds of up to 90 mph male horse flies pursue females with extreme passion, not unlike the “bar fly” pursuit between men and women which is usually at a much slower speed, however requires the outlay of great amounts of cash.  All this guy needs is a novelty tie, and he is styling.

Possibly giving Up on Neckties? Just Kidding

Now That We Are on the Subject of Aliens and Outer Space

I may have a new job, which will impact this blog.  Most likely this is not going to happen but I do have a job interview next month.  If I get this position then I will not be able to continue selling neckties or writing important or un-important articles for this blog.  This was a employment ad in Craigh's List.

Astronaut needed for experimental flight to Titan. I have been working on this project now for near 40 years and am afraid I'm no longer fit enough to go. My secret space craft is the result of my professional experience and imagination while serving the U.S. military in advanced aeronautics as a scientist. The craft harnesses a revolutionary propulsion system and its fuselage is fabricated with the most advanced material. While considerably safe,

I am certain you will make it safely to Titan but there will not be enough fuel to get home. This is for someone unique that has always wanted to see the universe first and has perhaps a terminal view on life here at home. Here's your shot at romantic history.

Must be:
- physically fit.
- mentally sound.
- over the age of 18.
- a dreamer.
- a believer.
- not afraid of heights.
- not afraid of extreme conditions such as speed, pressure, heat, etc.
- brave.
- no taller than 5'10 and relatively slim.
- good eye-sight & hearing.
- manual dexterity (although the craft is largely cpu controlled).
- OK in cramped conditions for long periods of time.

Location: Northern Alberta
Compensation: $25,000 CASH.
This is a contract job.
Principals only. Recruiters, please don't contact this job poster.
Please, no phone calls about this job!
Please do not contact job poster about other services, products or commercial interests.
