Not another Sexy Necktie Knot Lesson

Yes I am afraid so.   How to tie a tie with April.

I retired April from the blog some years back and decided this evening that that decision may have been a bit rash.   She has a rather special way of teaching necktie knotting.  As she says, "Maybe your dad should have taught you how to tie ties, but today I will show you."   I can guarantee that your father would never have been able to teach you how to master necktie tying like April does.

As for anyone complaining about having to watch another sexy tie tying video - my advice is to go see a "shrink."   Frankly it is quite hard to imagine that anyone would want to complain about this tie tying video, never-the-less there will be one guy's wife or girlfriend that will be unhappy.  And that is simply - tough luck because the complaint department is out of town. It is not impossible to file such complaint but you have to go to Las Vegas to find the guy.  He has not been around for many years - like 20 or so.  It is a really long story but you can read a story about him here. What's the Difference Between the Men and the Boys?

He won't be hard to find because he a a rather dapper gentleman who wears suits and ties religiously.  You will have a picture of him on the post I have referred you to.  Last I heard he is in Las Vegas and although there are a lot people in Las Vegas and a lot of dapper men wearing suits and ties there is only one Viking from Iceland named Thor Fredrickson there.

He should not be so hard tio find - I understand he is very popular in Vegas and everyone who is anyone knows him.

Please review the easy diagram and instructions to master tying the Windsor Necktie Knot below.

When you tie this knot this way it goes on and off easy - no inner knot remains when you loosen this knot by carefully pulling the knot down the narrow tie length.  Step # 7 & 8 are going the opposite direction from how the Duke of Windsor demonstrated it in a 1936 photo sequence. That reverse of direction makes the difference and makes the Windsor Tie Knot a horrible task to master unless by accident you have made this tie knot the easy way as illustrated below.

The wide blade of the tie does all of the work.  Start by turning your collar up and drape the tie over your shirt and neck with the wide tie blade near your knee - either just below, just above or right at your knee cap.  This is the most important step as it is this calibration that determines how much length of wide blade of the tie you'll need where the end result will prove the correct length of the tie to complete the knot.

The Duke of Windsor tying his necktie named after him in a very confusing way so that non-
blue bloods would dare to look so dashing
This will take some practice to get it right as it will calibrate the length of the tie so the wide blade covers your waistband when you are finished. Everyone has a different size neck and torso so you will have to find the "sweet" spot to start your tie-tying.  That spot is where the wide tie blade is in relation to your knee.

The ties slip stitching is against your chest with the front or face of the tie showing. As mentioned you may need to practice several times so you are starting with the wide blade of the tie at the right place. Carefully fold the tie without twisting, tightening the wrapping tie length.  After the final step just draw the knot up to your collar while holding the narrow blade of the tie.  A little adjustment may be necessary to shape the knot into place and to possibly create the dimple in the tie just below the knot.

You are welcome to print the diagram for later use if you like, ( it is formatted to fit on 8.5X11 paper ). Tying ties is really not so hard if you know the easy way to do it. Our Windsor Tie Knot lesson is simple - with a little practice, you will be a pro at it. Your necktie knot should have an automatic symmetrical shape and a very sexy dimple in the length of the tie just below the knot.

The Windsor Tie Knotting Diagram the Easy Way

The Romantic Way to Tie a Necktie  - The Windsor

The Windsor Tie knotting diagram and lesson is below. You are welcome to print the diagram for later use if you like. Tying ties is really not so hard, if you know the easy way to do it. Our Windsor Tie Knot lesson is simple to master - with a little practice you will be a pro at it.  Your necktie will have an automatic symmetrical knot and a very sexy dimple in the length of the tie just below the knot.

This diagram  is drawn in reverse so you can attach it to a mirror and follow it step by step.  It is, however illustrated for right handed tie knotters, so if you are a south paw you may need to create this diagram in reverse.  In no time at all you will master tying this refined gentleman's necktie knot.  Tying ties could not be easier - the double Windsor necktie knot.

How to tie a Windsor Necktie Knot

There is another way to achieve the Windsor Tie Knot however it is fairly confusing to master.  When you tie this knot using this method your tie will go on and off easy - no inner knot remains when you loosen this knot by carefully pulling the knot down the narrow tie length.  Step # 7 & 8 are going the opposite direction from how the Duke of Windsor demonstrated it in a 1936 photo sequence.  That reverse of direction makes the difference and makes the Windsor knot a horrible task unless by accident you have made this tie knot the easy way.  Besides making the knot hard to master if the knot is made the way that the photo sequence illustration instructs; an inner knot remains once the tie is removed causing great damage to a tie unless it is completely unraveled.  That inner knot makes the tie knot really difficult to undo and will twist the inner lining and wrinkle the tie’s fabric, a common result of laziness or sheer neglect, which is evident on used ties at thrift stores.   Hoax, or just a way to complicate the steps so not every man could look as handsome as the "Blue Bloods" the awkward necktie knot is easily tied now that you have our tie tying diagram.

The wide blade of the tie does all of the work.  Start by turning your collar up and drape the tie over your neck with the wide tie blade near your knee.  This is the most important step as the end result proves the correct length of the tie once the knot is finished.  This practice will calibrate the length of the tie so the wide blade covers your waist band when you are finished.  The ties slip stitching is against your chest with the front or face of the tie showing.  As mentioned you may need to practice several times so you are starting with the wide blade of the tie at the right place.  Carefully fold the tie without twisting and after the final step just draw the knot up to your collar while holding the narrow blade of the tie.

Edward the VIII abdicated the throne in 1936, after just 11 months - choosing to marry a divorced American women in defiance of the Church of England and Winston Churchill.  He was given the title of the Duke of Windsor and inadvertently he was given credit for the stylish tie knot thanks to the paparazzi,  It was the world wide attention he received after giving up the Throne for love while sporting that Royal necktie knot so handsomely in tabloids and newspapers.   However in a photographic sequence for an American photo journalist the Duke of Windsor demonstrated how to tie the Windsor in a difficult manner changing the second to last step.

The Sexy Way to Tie a Necktie Knot

Well I must say, this was strong competition for April, our original sexy tie tying necktie lesson girl.   So I retired her.  Man, that sure was a hard opening line, and full of keywords for neckties too. Watch this babe tie a nice necktie knot just for you.  Now there is one more reason to learn how to tie a tie. .

This is absolutely the sexiest Windsor Necktie Knot lesson I have ever seen.  Not only is Ashley tying the Windsor in a very pleasant way to observe, thanks to her charming good looks, she is tying the Windsor necktie knot the correct way.  There are several ways to tie a tie that looks like the Windsor, although those tie knots are not easy to master and are very clumsy to accomplish.  In the end they may look like a Windsor tie knot with a symmetrical shape after some careful however thumb and index finger work, they are not the Windsor and they do not form a sexy dimple below the knot without extra effort..

The worst thing about making what I call a fake Windsor tie knot instead of the real thing is that the tie knot actually has an inner knot that makes taking the tie off complicated.  That inner knot must be un-wound carefully after the tie is removed from around your neck as it becomes much tighter when you take it off.   If the tie is not completely untied promptly the next time you will want to wear it the inner lining and the tie itself will have an unrelenting twist and will be most likely be completely damaged beyond use..

April will show you how its done the right way unlike many other videos including a very horrible demonstration by G.Q. I found about a year ago on line.

Visit our on line necktie shop to check out our Windsor Necktie Knot Lesson   It may not be as sexy as this necktie tying lesson but it is well worth the time to see. And, you will learn the mystery of the Windsor tie knot.  It is quite a romantic story.

A Gorilla Wearing a Tie vs. and Ape with a Riffle

A Gorilla wearing neckties

I would never, ever say the world of fashion is not like a jungle, surely not the fashion world of neckties.

An ape shooting an AK 47 Assault Riffle is not something to laugh at; well at least it's not supposed to be funny, ( video below ).  This is a very alarming instance of men and beast interacting with each other. Gauging the advance of evolution is a funny science given all of the variables. Being civilized in the jungle of our world can be a bit complicated given all of the different beliefs in religion and more important, taking into account the greed factor.

If an ape were to get a hold of a loaded AK 47 Riffle what would he think about? Now, what if the ape was given a necktie? Could he tie a tie? Would he wear it and would he become more civil? I believe that we have a testament to the Darwin Theory of evolution here. Certainly this is a monkey see, monkey do thing but what is clearly unique here is that ape becomes very celebratory after he conquers his territory. We live in a very dangerous world. I guess this is proof that being a killer does not take much intelligence. The Ape sure caught on fast as you may note that in the end he is displaying the absolute characteristics of a victorious warrior.

Ape shoots an AK 47 Riffle instead or wearing neckties
Just imagine if his behavior were changed and he was not being so aggressive but being much more friendly and as well receiving kind gestures and body language in return.  I am sure that if the ape were to be handed a tie and given a few short lessons in tying it he would like wearing neckties. In fact he would become quite attached to his new found fashionable look. I am sure that if the ape were to be handed a tie and given a few short lessons in tying it he would like wearing ties.

The celebration of the victory may be scary
then the shooting
In fact he would probably become quite attached to his new found fashionable look. Most likely the extra respect he would receive would become an addiction to him. The added attraction from female apes and the possibility of higher political status he would gain would improve his character substantially. Just considering how elegant his cousin, the gorilla appears in the photo above compared to the chaotic images from the video from YouTube below,  the answer is obvious. Soon Yahoo will be tooting the fashion horn, “Gorilla trending neckties sets the jungle fashion world on fire.”

Watch the video below if you have any doubt that the behavior of an ape can become a bit of a problem once he has his grip on a loaded AK 47 Assault Riffle. In a viral ad campaign, producers of the new film "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" released a series of videos showing weapon-wielding apes. Stylized to look like documentary footage out of Africa, one video features a chimp shooting an AK-47 at a group of off-duty soldiers who had been taunting it.  Yes those are actors, but that is a real ape and he is surely taking matters into his own hands.

To Tie A Tie Or Not To Tie A Tie - How To Tie A Tie

The Windsor Tie Knot

About a half a billion neckties are assembled around the necks of men everyday!  85% are tied as the simple “Four in Hand” Tie Knot (known as the Regate in France)

To tie a tie, or not to tie a tie? - that is “knot” the question.  It sounds better than what the question should be.  The question is, how to tie a tie, or how not to tie a tie, not why.

However, it doesn't have that fancy ring to it, like the famous opening phrase from Shakespeare's play Hamlet, 1602.  I have exhausted myself lately with the ever so annoying question - why to tie a tie.  So I decided to make fun of the serious matter of wearing neckties or not which actually has become a topic of great passion among men and, or gentlemen.  If you have read some of my recent blog posts then you probably already know about my extensive and sometimes outrageous answers are; Why to tie a tie or not?  If not, then just scroll down and read some of the posts, some of them are very funny, very serious, and some a little of both.  Also, check out I Love Ties a post I made about a year ago that was in part originally a comment to a hateful blog named “die necktie, die!

Back to what this article concerns, is the confusion over how to tie ties, especially the Windsor necktie knot.  The knotting of the very fashionable and stylish Windsor has eluded many men over the last 70 years or so for mostly dumb reasons.  It is easy to master, once you know the simple way to do it.  I do not think that it is just being lazy or not caring enough to learn how but much of trouble is partly due to confusion over how to do the Windsor.  Apparently, there is more than one method to tie a tie into a symmetrical knot with the cute dimple below. And, at least one is a really difficult method to manage the hand movements to execute a knot with any form at all.  It is just a clumsy way to do it, period.  I have a theory about this method which is part of an essay I have written on our retail site ( link below ).

Going through page after page on Google searching for necktie knotting advice and diagrams I found a really great video that actually illustrates how to do what I consider the real Windsor Necktie Knot.  That's right - I said real.  If anyone wants to fight about that – I am, waiting. In the past and in this instance, I found web pages and videos that not only demonstrate a difficult method of tying a tie; some are simply not the Windsor at all.   It is no wonder that it is a frustrating tie knot to learn when in addition to complicated knotting techniques, completely false presentations of how a Windsor knot are made.   One very established "how to" site I found about a year ago highlighted a special guest speaker with credentials to die for, explaining and demonstrating the half Windsor knot or something else, claiming that it is the Full Windsor tie knot.  I will not name that web-site, or the mistaken expert, but he is a style correspondent for a really big men's fashion magazine, go figure.  I sent them an email and they removed that video and now only have a video on how to do the "Four in Hand" tie knot or the "Regate" a knot that the French love - especially Pierre Cardin.

The Full Windsor Necktie Knot is really not that hard to make. It will take a little practice and some self-esteem and most important, the simple and what I consider to be the correct method of how to make the Windsor Tie Knot. You will need a few things besides some time and before long you'll be a pro - just like scrambling eggs. When you were young watching your mom in the kitchen that seemed like a really hard task - just breaking those eggs without breaking them all over the place seemed impossible. I'm sure that most people - even guys master that one. Tying ties is about as simple, once you know how. Below is the link to the fabulous video I found, a link to a page on our retail site Nice Tie Store called the Mystery of the Windsor Tie Knot where you can find my diagram how to make the Windsor Necktie Knot - the way I was taught, along with the romantic story about how this knot came to be so appreciated and elusive. Additionally, I’ve added a couple of other Internet pages that may be useful.

Here is the list of what you will need to learn how to tie a Windsor tie knot.  My simple Windsor Necktie Knot Diagram is below.

1. A tie, obviously - but, more important a proper necktie in length. If you have a neck larger than 17 inches or you are taller than 6 foot you will need an extra long tie 61 – 63 inches. Normal ties are about 57 inches in length. If you try to make a knot with a tie shorter than your body calls for you will not have enough length to start the tie knotting when wrapping around your neck and shirt collar - before you even begin. This is true especially with the Windsor tie knot as it involves more passes or wraps than other tie knots. That is why some guys do the half Windsor as this knot is similar and works when a longer tie is not available. When you read the directions on my diagram about calibrating the tie for yourself - it is ultimately important concerning the eventual end result.  You will understand the length issue better after you practice a few times.

2. A mirror - tying a tie without a mirror is only possible after you've learned how to do it correctly. Still, it is always a good idea to do the knotting in front of a mirror, just in case you are not at your best or worse, you’re tying the wrong tie, etc.

3. A shirt with a collar - the collar has to be the right size neck for you or forget trying to do this.

4. A pair of pants that has belt loops, ( a pair of dress slacks ).-  The wide tie blade that hangs from your neck is supposed to end just about covering the belt buckle. If you tie your tie while you are still in your boxers you’ll be ditched.

5. A half hour or so - maybe two or three times to perfect the hand movements and the calibration of where to start regarding how much tie length is in your right and left hand, and where the wide blade is in relation to your right knee, ( see my diagram directions )

6. My Windsor Necktie Knot diagram on how to do it taped to the mirror.- My diagram is drawn in reverse and since I am a "righty" I am not exactly sure what a lefty can make of it. It is not as hard as programming a television remote control so don’t be scared.

The Easy Way - Learn How To Tie The Windsor Tie Knot Diagram and Lesson

The You Tube Video - How To Tie A Tie: The Full Windsor

Tying a Windsor Necktie Knot
The Windsor knot, also sometimes referred to as a Full Windsor or erroneously as a Double Windsor to distinguish it from the Half Windsor, is a method of tying a necktie around one's neck and collar.  The Windsor knot, compared to other methods, produces a wide symmetrical triangular knot. The knot is often thought to be named after the Duke of Windsor ( King Edward VIII before his abdication ). It is, however, named after his grandfather Edward VII.  read more Windsor Knot - Wikipedia. The Internets Free Encyclopedia   - the page has a very similar diagram to mine ( link above mine has a few extra steps to make it a little easier to see the moves.  Wikipedia has my friend Thomas Finks diagram - Illustration on how to make a Windsor tie knot.  The 85 Ways to Tie A tie by Thomas Fink and Yong Mao

I must have found half dozen pages, videos and blog posts explaining and illustrating how to tie the Windsor knot incorrectly as I searched for a few new pages here.  Some were not the Windsor and some maybe an alternative way to tie the Windsor tie knot.  The ways other than what is illustrated in the video link above, on the Wikipedia's page, on Thomas Fink's Web Site - the 85 Ways To Tie A Tie and on our retail web site Nice Tie Store may actually produce a knot that looks like the Windsor, but that may not be the Windsor ( I've often said that there are a million ways to skin a cat ).

One video not only stresses the mirror – shirt, etc. but the guy is funny and really good at the "dog and pony show," He is seen tying the tie poorly in an exaggerated way to to show how the tie looks tied too short or too long - however his method is a confusing method concerning hand movement and will leave an inner knot tied when the tie is taken off. This can easily lead to damaged and ruined ties if the extra inner knot is not carefully un-done which is not always easy as they are usually tight and hard to loosen. There is a different move concerning the direction of the wide blade before its final wrap that causes this “inner knot.” That inner knot creates a lot of stress on the length of your necktie that becomes the knot over and over again so matter if you un-do it every time you remove your tie, damage is taking its toll. The next time you are at a thrift store or garage sale and you see a tie that has one of these unnecessary inner knots left or a tie that has a strange twist, wrinkle or the inner lining is twisted you’ll know what I mean. The method illustrated on our retail site in the You-Tube video and the other pages in the above links produce a Windsor knot that come off with almost no effort and without a nasty “inner knot” to deal with.

Close your eyes and try to remember your egg scrambling lessons. There was more than one way to get that to work out for the best. I finally learned the technique of trying to solve the removal of a stray piece of shell as the eggs were cooking from my wife as an adult, and, a better way to break them too. So if you’ve learned the wrong way to tie a Windsor Tie Knot or you never learned at all - think “scrambled eggs.”

Planned for this blog Find Ties - About Neckties is an article about the most popular tie knots, with the history of how they came to be along with diagrams and videos.

Andy Rooney, To Tie Or Not To Tie

I found this really fun article by C.B.S. 60 Minutes.  Andy Rooney's sarcastic and clever style makes the confusion of wearing tie or not very amusing - Jeffrey Hunter

Why Andy Likes Ties
CBS) A weekly commentary by CBS News Correspondent Andy Rooney. It originally aired on May 4, 2003.

Andy Rooney takes a look at how men wear (or don't wear) ties, coats, and jackets, and tells us what he likes best about wearing a tie.
view the video - Why Andy Likes Ties

A while ago I talked about fashion and I had a copy of Town & Country Magazine with an ad for a man's suit that sold for $2,400. I said I might buy this.

The editor, Pamela Fiori, sent me a picture of me in the suit. I never looked better. I've paid about $2,400 for my suits over the past fifty years. That's 24 suits at $100 each.

Men's fashions have changed as much as women's. For instance, men aren't wearing neckties as much as they used to. Most of the men you see on the street don't have one on.I usually wear a necktie even though I think it's sort of silly to tie a colored cloth around your neck. If he doesn't wear a tie, a man leaves the top button of his shirt undone. The trouble with that is then his underwear shows. A well-dressed woman wouldn't go around like this with her underwear showing.

If a man wears a necktie, it's usual for him to wear a jacket. Some men, though, wear a tie and no jacket.  few wear a jacket and no tie.  Most men don't wear a jacket or a tie.   When you see two men together, either neither is wearing a tie, or they're both wearing a tie.  Birds of a feather flock together. It probably has to do with whether the boss wears one.

A man who wears a coat is more apt to wear a necktie. A strange thing though, a lot of men who wear a coat don't wear it. They take it off and carry it.  Some of the old traditions are gone. White-collar workers often wear blue collars. Blue-collar workers often wear white.  It seems likely that men who wear ties make more money than men who do not. But it's hard to say whether ties make them successful, or whether they start wearing ties after they are successful.  Men on the street wearing neckties carry a briefcase, or important papers very often.

The tie clip business is even slower than the necktie business. You seldom see a man wearing one. They prefer to have their neckties flapping in the breeze. Men with tie clips often wear folded handkerchiefs in their breast pocket.   Suspenders are also a thing of the past, except for Larry King. Although I've seen a guy with suspenders, but no shirt, coat or necktie.  One reason for wearing a necktie doesn't have anything to do with how it looks.

But when you get home at night it feels so good to loosen it.

Not everything we post is about ties - there is actually more to life than neckties.  Can't believe I could even think that, let alone write it and post it on my blog.  I am selling ties for food money, etc.  There is nothing else in this world except neckties, so don't forget it.  And please buy a tie from me on our retail site URL link is below.  Anyway here is the "not about ties" post. This is slightly revised from the original version that my land lord and friend Israel emailed us.  He sells cars in West Covina - Los Angeles, and yes he wears ties - mostly ours.

John was a necktie salesman working at Nordstroms and he was a salesman's delight when it came to any kind of unusual gimmicks. You may already know the old adage that you cannot sell to a salesman is actually false.  He could not resist buying something that he was pitched, especially something very unique.  His wife Marsha had long ago given up trying to get him to change.

One day John came home with another one of his unusual purchases. It was a robot that John claimed was actually a lie detector. It was about 5:30 that afternoon when Tommy, their 11 year old son, returned home from school. Tommy was over 2 hours late.

"Where have you been? Why are you over 2 hours late getting home?" asked John.  "Several of us went to the library to work on an extra credit project," said Tommy. The robot walked around the table and slapped Tommy, knocking him completely out of his chair.

"Son," said John, "this robot is a lie detector, now tell us where you really were after school." "We went to Bobby's house and watched a movie." said Tommy.  "What did you watch?" asked Marsha. "The Ten Commandments." answered Tommy.

The robot went around to Tommy and once again slapped him, knocking him off his chair.  With his lip quivering, Tommy got up, sat down and said, "I am sorry I lied. We really watched a tape called Sex Queen."  "I am ashamed of you son," said John. "When I was your age, I never lied to my parents."  The robot walked around to John and delivered a whack that nearly knocked him out of his chair...

Marsha doubled over in laughter, almost in tears and said, "Boy, did you ever ask for that one! You can't be too mad with Tommy. After all, he is your son!"  The robot walked around to Marsha and knocked her out of her chair.

The story behind the Manhattan Skyline Photo

Original Photograph by Jeffrey Hunter - copyright 1990

The Manhattan Skyline

What does this have to do with ties?  Plenty!  You will just have to read this post to find out.   And the previous post.

The Rainbow Room on the 69th floor of 30 Rockefeller Plaza is known for its killer panoramic view of New York City, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Connecticut.

It is exactly 20 blocks north of the Empire State Building and if you happen to time it right you will see Manhattan in all of its glory. That means showing up right before sunset and in the winter months. If you check out this posh art deco style bar during the summer months or close to them the buildings office lights will not be as saturated. In that case the view is less then picture perfect but still sensational. New Yorkers may be really serious about business and work however they do go home at the end of the day and it is usually not at 4:00 pm.

I took this image at around 5:00 pm in December in 1990 with an old Nikon mounted on a tripod. I had to buy a $65 bottle of wine and wait until the waiter opened the bottle before I set up the entire rig. It was a 4 minute exposure at f11 with a nikkor 50 mm 1.8 lens. This was no easy task as the camera had to have a cabled shutter release and the lens had to kiss the window squarely and that tripod and the rest of my gear was not so pretty to look at. In other words it was a full tilt production.

The manager came over almost right away and asked me to quit or leave. I argued that I was not abandoning my bottle and I was not anxious to quit with just one or two frames shot. I was with an attractive lady but that did not seem to help matters. I had a nice suit and of course a tie tied with a Windsor knot as well. A Mexican guy with movie star good looks and a really gorgeous blond were seated next to our table. He looked like he was really wealthy and with a motion of his hand he waved the manager to his side. With the softest of tone he whispered "The photographer stays" And that was that I nodded and he acknowledged by gratitude.

Maybe it was a combination of my dare, the creative edge I was pushing, the bottle of wine and my moxy that impressed him. But there will never be a doubt in m mind what really made it happen. I had a nice suit on and of course complimented by a beautiful tie which persuaded him to intervene. After all if you are not in a suit and tie then you are not getting out of that elevator. If you forget the tie you can fix the problem by running to the nearest corner and buying a tie on the street for less than the price of a beer in that lofty bar, ( about $10.00 now ). If you do not have a suit then that is also not a problem. There are plenty of men’s shops anxious to sell another suit to a tourist who did not pack a suit because he did not know that New York City is actually a very classy place.
