Are Ties Cool Again?

Models present creations by French designer Veronique
Nichanian for Hermes - the Men's Autumn-Winter 2012-13
The more things change, the more they stay the same.“

I never actually understood how that could be.  I guess it is one of the clichés that meant something at a certain time, something fashionable, not necessarily fashionable in the sense of fashion attire, but a state of fashion regarding what society accepts as chic or maybe just society itself.

As seen in late January in a Paris Men's fashion show neckties are hardly a forgotten fashion accessory.  The necktie has seen a new sense of recognition by designers and young men, especially skinny ties.  Wearing suits is back in style and ties are meant to go with them.  Things change regarding fashion - that's what fashion means. What was fashionable once, can be again.  Everything that is created, or envisioned is influenced by what has been.  Sometimes ideas, especially fashion ideas are reborn, with a new found appreciation.   Kind of like when color television and film replaced black and white.  It was not very long before black and white film was considered an art and became a much appreciated medium in story telling.  Story telling just seemed to have a greater passion with the life like realism of color replaced with black and white.

The point I am making is regarding an attitude towards neckties by young men that has caused a stylish craze that has escaped most men of years.  Apparently men wearing neckties are gracing the runways of the fashion world, on the college campus as ties are making a big comeback in the men's retail.   Narrow ties have especially become a favorite of younger men that recently considered wearing ties as a restriction to their freedom.  When men were wearing neckties religiously a rebellious wave against ties became a means of expression for youth.

For at least the last two or three decades, wearing neckties became a sort of un-fashion statement by youth.  It was an easy way to be different and unique, shunning authority by resisting to conform to a way that their fathers had deemed proper.  For a young man novelty theme ties like music and rock and roll themes had been the tie of choice as at least it was a way to make a statement. To be cool and still be a rebel even though it was not possible to avoid the dreaded conforming to an unpopular dress code.  This was one of the great successes of Jerry Garcia ties.

Now, serious fashion ties like rep stripes and conservative design are being tied around the necks of the young.   By sharp contrast, men are becoming less refined embracing a casual attire in a similar way and for possibly the same reason, to become free of authoritive fashion.  Maybe they want to feel young and free again.

So there it is,  “The more things change, the more they stay the same.“  kind-of-sort-of.

Now that older men have ditched it to look cool, the stylish young are reclaiming the necktie as their own, with the once-derided accessory making a stealthy comeback on the menswear runways.

At Lanvin on Sunday there were no ties until the finale, but there were neckties for all the evening looks — save for a single bow-tie, a nod to the personal style of designer Alber Elbaz.

"Ties are a part of the suit that is coming back," Elbaz confirmed. "Not the ties of our fathers or grandfathers. They are worn by a new generation that comes from sport, new technologies.  "It's neither the world of the dandy nor of the boardroom."  Read more Could Neckties Be Cool Again

Very Unusual Necktie Art

Ocean Beach San Diego necktie artist says she just wants to get people thinking

Just when I thought that I had seen everything possible about neckties, well at least read.  I sure wish I had a photo of this - Jeffrey Hunter

By Andy Castagnola

check out the story and the video on
SIGNON SAN DIEGO  signonsandiego.com/news/2010/dec/31/ocean-beach-necktie-artist

OCEAN BEACH — Who’s the person behind the fashionable conversation piece that’s sprouted at Monaco Street and Sunset Cliffs Boulevard?

Her name is April Cromer, a local artist and jewelry and clothing designer. And she answered a few questions about her unusual necktie-on-a-pole street art.

Q: How many ties are on there?
A: I didn’t even count. I would guess like 75.

Q: Have people been adding their own ties to the pole?
A: It’s street art, so it’s up to anyone to take a tie or add a tie or do whatever they want with it.

Q: Have you ever done public art before?
A: Not at this scale, no. I’ve always been interested in street art.

Q: Why neckties?
A: Well, I guess to be completely honest, I was trying to get rid of a bunch of art supplies. I got this idea to put them somewhere where everyone can enjoy them, instead of sitting in an art room collecting dust. … I decided to figure out how to tie a double-Windsor and go down there and do it.

Q: Why on a street pole?
A: I wanted it to be somewhere where people were going to see it on their daily walk, somewhere that has a lot of foot traffic. … O.B. has always been home for me. … I wanted it to be in a place that was familiar to me.

Q: What do you think when you see it?
A: It’s my little contribution to the community. O.B. is such a kooky, crazy place. … I love seeing random pieces of art wherever I go. It changes your environment, makes you see things differently, makes you ask all these questions.

Q: What kind of response have you gotten?
A: I’ve been there a couple of times since I put it up. I was down there today and saw this woman walking her dog and two kids. … It was cool to be connected with other people in community; hopefully they’re inspired to make something of their own.

Q: How long will you leave it up?
A: I plan on leaving it there until the city decides to take it down, or when the ties are taken on their own adventure. I really have no intention of taking it down.

Q: How long have you lived in San Diego? What’s your profession?
A: I grew up here. I went to San Francisco for school for a while. I went to art school. I have a small clothing and jewelry business … and I use found objects repurposed into wearable works of art. I sell at the O.B. Farmers Market on Wednesdays.

Q: What’s next for you?
A: I have a lot of fabric that I’d like to do something with. Not enough ties to do another tie pole. I want to mix it up. I can’t say what the next step is. My friends say I should make a gigantic tie and hang it from electrical wires. It’ll be whatever comes to mind.

MY COMMENT ON SIGN ON SAN DIEGO: PLEEEEAASSSSEEEEEEE what is all the fuss. Well - I think that this fantastic. It is a wonderful thing that a simple thing like tying a few ties on a tel pole could cause such a stir. It is definitely art and if those who can only speak negatively about it then a reality check is in order. Maybe they are jealous that their own creative efforts never amount to anything. Andy Warhol already proved that anything could considered as artwork.

Now the real question here is if it were bras or under wear would there be less of a controversy. Maybe not, maybe more, but surely because so many men are afraid of neckties and the serious demeanor that they represent the uproar is loud and clear.

Can some please send me a photo of this unique necktie street sign artwork so I can post it on my blog http://nicetiestore.blogspot.c... Jeffrey@nicetiestore.com

Neckties and Occasions – How to Match?

Save novelty - conversation neckties this guy says it all about what necktie to wear and when - Jeffrey Hunter

Author: Gentleman Joe

Neckties and Occasions – How to Match?

Different occasions require different fashion and in terms of neckties there are three major categories that they belong to namely – solid colors, striped and patterned neckties. Each category works really well on a specific occasion and you would definitely find it easy to mix and match as long as you know which of them will look good. For example, dark blue ties match pretty well with any light colored shirt and in any occasion. You can wear it in all your business functions, interview and social gathering with other prominent people in your industry. Black neckties on the other hand are more appropriate for weddings and other more formal functions.

However, even when a dark blue tie may seem casual to any onlooker, it entirely depends on who wears it and how he wears it on that occasion. Most solid ties can be worn on all seasons, events and well-matched with any light colored shirt. It creates the perfect contrast that can highlight your otherwise dead outfit. You just have to remember that they should not be blended with any patterned shirt whether or not they are silk or a mixture of other fabrics. Other than the dark blue necktie, black and other darkly colored neckties are also a must have in your wardrobe such as maroon and dark brown. Nothing could go wrong with the solid colored neckties.

If you want to be more outgoing and successful looking, striped ties would be a great fit. You can choose from different varieties of colors without becoming confused. You just have to remember the kind of event or occasion that you are going to attend so that you would know whether it would work or not. Striped ties that would match well any with formal events are those ties with stripes that are brightly colored with a black background or if not any solid colored background. You can also use them in less formal events particularly those with small sized stripes that are placed widely, which will actually create a more impressive look.

There are also various types of patterned ties that you can choose from such as club, university and plaid. Club ties are those that have small badges, crests and shields as their patterns. They also have different patterns showing racing or golf cars, which are specific to the particular club it represents. No matter what kind of occasion or event that you are going to attend, make sure that your neckties will represent a kind of meaning inherent to you as the wearer. Your necktie represents the truth in your personality and it isn't just picked out of whim. You think when you buy this piece of apparel. You mix them and you match them any way you want them to be. You also consider the event where you are going to wear them to.

Usually, university neckties are those that are made in thin silk fabric. They usually have small geometric designs as their pattern and are used among students in Universities. Dotted and diamond patterned neckties are also trendy today but they are mostly used in non-formal events. If you ever see them worn then they should be well-matched for the most part.

Plaid neckties on the other hand are not suitable for any organizational gathering or solemn events. They are good on informal venues and occasions and almost all types of personalities can benefit from wearing plaid neckties.

A Brief History of: The Necktie

TIME MAGAZINE AND CNN

Wide or skinny, plaid or plain, synthetic or silk, the tie is a Father's Day staple--nearly 4.5 million dads are getting one on June 15--and one of the few fashion accessories to have survived nearly 400 years of social change. Neck adornments have been worn since ancient times to signify title or wealth or even just to sop up sweat. But modern, mostly decorative neckwear dates from King Louis XIV of France, who first popularized the tie's predecessor, the cravat, after spotting the bow-tie-like embellishment on 17th century Croatian soldiers.

New York City Tenement Necktie Workshop 1889

Two centuries later, the Industrial Revolution helped spread the style to the masses, as millions of workers migrated from farmlands to factories and the business class was born. In 1924 an American tailor named Jesse Langsdorf created--and patented--the tie's modern look, with its bias cut and three-piece construction. By the 1950s, it was said that a man wasn't fully dressed until he had put on his tie. But as the high age of the Organization Man faded, the tie came to symbolize individuality as much as conformity. Ralph Lauren launched the ill-advised 4-in.-wide (10 cm) trend in the 1970s, and the following decade saw the accessory appropriated by everyone from Ivy Leaguers (striped ties!) to punks (skinny ties!) to Wall Street moguls (power ties!).

Tie sales hit a peak of $1.3 billion in 1995 but steadily declined as the dotcom boom threatened to obliterate neckwear entirely and business casual took hold in the workplace. Just last week the Men's Dress Furnishings Association, which represents American tiemakers, announced it will close its doors. Still, some analysts see an upside in the current economic downturn: laid-off workers looking to stand out in job interviews could spark a tie-wearing boom.

The Great Necktie Wars Have Started

Lose the necktie at Colton steakhouse

Decapitation of neckties is a ritual at this steak house.  Now, I am certain that the demise of civilization is up-stoppable.

The story starts off like this: It starts with the tie. Diners who are rash enough to visit Pinnacle Peak in neckwear get it removed. The hard and/or fun way is when a food server cuts it off with some impressively sharp scissors and makes you sing "Home on the Range" to your dining party. read more here

This is a comment I made on that blog that promotes the Colton Steakhouse:

Man this just kills me. Those poor ties, they never meant to hurt anyone. There is even a Picasso up on that wall - I have to sit back in my chair or I may just have a panic attack. Well its a free country isn't it,  but why take out the frustration of daily life on a fashion accessory that is actually a very wonderful form of expression. So, I have decided to start a forum called "I Love or Hate Neckties and this post will be among the first examples of the phenomenon of this society's conflict with neckties. As well, I will be sure to post this one on my blog http://nicetiestore.blogspot.com/ with a courtesy link back to your post.

After all I am a gentlemen but as they say all is fair in love and war. I must stand my ground and take some creative action here. I think the Great Necktie War has started.

Cordially yours

Jeffrey Hunter

http://www.nicetiestore.com/

You may want to read an earlier post I made in March - actually my second and one of the reason I started this bog -  http://nicetiestore.blogspot.com/2010/03/i-love-ties.html

More and more I see this overwhelming hatred towards neckties. When I had a necktie kiosk at the Irvine Spectrum Center iand Fashion Island in Newport Beach in Southern California men would go out of their way to make awfull comments and with no regard for decency attack my tie business with vigor. Even some of friends make jokes about my nektie affection.

So I am fighting back now.  The glove are off BRO.  The Great Necktie War has Started.  Stay tuned for the post that will have the forum link and further necktie "hater" alerts.

Mr Silver - Trending A Monochromatic Fashion Statement

The Silver Man Sporting a Silver Necktie
The Silver Man Sporting a  Silver Necktie
original photography by Jeffrey Hunter copyright 2000

This one reminds me of the beauty covered in gold paint in the 60's James Bond 007 Goldfinger.  If you are interested in the true story about this guy and why I took this photograph read the funny story below.

This is a fashion statement for the solid color tie worth more than a million dollars. It was not long ago that the Regis Philbin on his Who Wants To Be A Millionaire Show caused a necktie sensation that had men and women in a “twighlight zone like” trance over the stealthy monochromatic fashion statement. A fashion trend at least, this necktie style proved that not only rappers, and basketball players set trends.

For a living as a robotic mime, Mr. Silver takes the monochromatic look quite seriously wearing a solid silk silver necktie and them some. It takes over an hour to do the makeup; lucky for him it comes off faster. Yes, you guessed it - he has to shower to remove the silver coating he meticulously covers about 50% of his body with. However he first must drive home to Los Angeles where he lives, about a 45 minute drive from the Irvine Spectrum Center where his performance has captivated many.

If you are driving the I-5 Freeway in southern California you may be lucky to see his show and his fashionable costume for yourself. You cannot miss the place, its’ where the 405 and 5 Interstate Freeways merge. The Spectrum, Orange County’s number one hot spot with night clubs, restaurants, a giant 21 screen Edwards Theater with an Imax, a Nordstrom's, hundreds of retailers, and three coffee houses and the best novelty tie cart - kiosk in the world, At least until July of 2001 the famous Too Sexie Tie Kiosk was there, a specialty retail venue that I had operated for almost 4 years at that mall.

On weekends something very special is center stage in the court yard in front of Edwards four stadium seat theaters. On Friday and Saturday in the evening the Mr. Silver show will have hundreds of on lookers spell-bound as the robotic Terminator looking actor goes through his “out of this world” routine.

You can only imagine what a California Highway Patrol Officer thought one late night when he stopped Mr. Silver on the 405 freeway on his way home for excessive speed. “Silver” at least that is what I called him ( I have always loved the Silver Surfer ), did not get the speeding ticket but was detained until several other officers could come by for a look. Back at the station and at breakfast tables the following morning those cops had a much different story to tell then the usual villain or freeway chase tale. “Honey I met E.T. last night and he was wearing a silver tie.”

Desert Necktie Joke

Then there was Mike, the Irvine Spectrum Center Houdini Magic Store magician who claimed to know about a man who walked through the desert on this narrow road for miles and miles and miles, day after day after day. He became very thirsty and hungry too, as he walked and walked and walked.

On the first day he found a little cart selling neckties and all he wanted was a drink and a hamburger with French fries. The lady at the tie cart knew of no place to get food. So the man walked on, and walked on, until in the distance he saw another cart hoping that it would be a food and drink stand. When he finally walked up to it, all they were selling were neckties, and again the lady knew of no place to get food or a drink. The man walked on continuing for days. And, every day he would see in the distance another cart, and all that was for sale were neckties.

Just like a mirage, over and over, nothing for miles and miles in the desert, and then another necktie cart selling neckties? And, no food or drink.

The man was very tired and very hungry and very thirsty, and finally after days, and days of walking, and looking at neckties on necktie carts in the desert day after day he saw in the distance a building. It was bigger than the carts and it had windows with curtains. It was a restaurant. The man could not believe his eyes and, when he finally walked up to it and was not a mirage, it was not another necktie cart, it was French Restaurant.

The man could hardly believe it. He opened the door and there was a French man with a neatly trimmed mustache in a tuxedo standing with a menu, and said with a very thick French accent, said “Bon Jour”.

The man asked for a table for one, at which point the maitre'd exclaimed,

"But sirrr vee could not poossiblyyy serve youuuu with outttt a necktie."
