I never actually understood how that could be. I guess it is one of the clichés that meant something at a certain time, something fashionable, not necessarily fashionable in the sense of fashion attire, but a state of fashion regarding what society accepts as chic or maybe just society itself.

As seen in late January in a Paris Men's fashion show neckties are hardly a forgotten fashion accessory. The necktie has seen a new sense of recognition by designers and young men, especially skinny ties. Wearing suits is back in style and ties are meant to go with them. Things change regarding fashion - that's what fashion means. What was fashionable once, can be again.  Everything that is created, or envisioned is influenced by what has been.  Sometimes ideas, especially fashion ideas are reborn, with a new found appreciation.   Kind of like when color television and film replaced black and white. It was not very long before black and white film was considered an art and became a much appreciated medium in story telling. Story telling just seemed to have a greater passion with the life like realism of color replaced with black and white.

The point I am making is regarding an attitude towards neckties by young men that has caused a stylish craze that has escaped most men of years. Apparently men wearing neckties are gracing the runways of the fashion world, on the college campus as ties are making a big comeback in the men's retail.   Narrow ties have especially become a favorite of younger men that recently considered wearing ties as a restriction to their freedom. When men were wearing neckties religiously a rebellious wave against ties became a means of expression for youth.

For at least the last two or three decades, wearing neckties became a sort of un-fashion statement by youth. It was an easy way to be different and unique, shunning authority by resisting to conform to a way that their fathers had deemed proper. For a young man novelty theme ties like music and rock and roll themes had been the tie of choice as at least it was a way to make a statement. To be cool and still be a rebel even though it was not possible to avoid the dreaded conforming to an unpopular dress code. This was one of the great successes of Jerry Garcia ties.

Now, serious fashion ties like rep stripes and conservative design are being tied around the necks of the young.   By sharp contrast, men are becoming less refined embracing a casual attire in a similar way and for possibly the same reason, to become free of authoritive fashion. Maybe they want to feel young and free again.

So there it is,  “The more things change, the more they stay the same.“ kind-of-sort-of.

Rock and roll musicians wearing ties are not a common fashion trend for sure, however it was not always the case.

A visitor to this blog asked me for my opinion on this matter so with his permission I have decided to post his question and my anwser. A follow up post in the next day or so will be my theory on why rock and rollers don't wear neckties.

Ties and musicians or to be on point - no ties and musicians; what comes to mind is the Beatles and their influence on a generation that in just a decade caused a great shift in culture, which had quite an effect on what fashion meant to youth. Of course most notably - the advent of a loss for barbers. The Beatles did wear neckties in the beginning of "Beatle Mania," you can see for youself in the photo below.

Jeffrey, I just spent a few minutes on your blog looking for something to answer this: "When did the necktie stop being used routinely by music groups?" (and thus lead the way to informality, in general, in the general public of the USA)

This was a question I asked myself after I was sent a sixties pic of Peter and Gordon... of course they were wearing neckties.

I have a pic of men wearing black trousers, vests, suit jackets, and black bowler hats from 1906, with the enormous fish they caught near Catalina. In August! Today I would be in shorts and tee shirt and a wide brim white hat.

I'm a sixty year old and grew up with LA radio music, beginning in about 1957, and living in the Pacific Palisades. My dad stopped wearing a hat about when I was born, and I always figured that was a So Cal thing. But this is really not about hats, or suits, it's about the tie...

I am going to post your email message if you do not mind in a forum of sort’s format.

I have often wondered about this as well. I have memories of images on TV and in magazines and newspapers of the Beatles wearing ties. I was 8 years old when Ed Sullivan had them on his show. I'll never forget that introduction. In the latter half of 60's a change was occurring in society which was certainly the cause of the un-popular Vietnam War and the free love movement. I guess a hippie wearing a necktie would send a soft message and absolutely yield conformity to authority that was not within the main objective of becoming free of what we now know as corporate corruption. By comparison, I do not see many "Occupiers" in suits and ties - that would send a mixed message I guess.

I did a post about a year ago that illustrates the necktie and the musician issue. It may have something to do with the thought that musicians are artists and supper creative, while the managers and businessmen “the suits" are not creative at least in the artistic sense. They are seriously managing difficult and complex financial matters, and being respectful of the dynamic of big business is all too important. An artist probably has no concept of that abstract world and wearing the attire that is customary within that institution just was not going fit in the “groovy universe” that musicians had to exist in. Certainly not while most of the people who were adoring them were in jeans and T shirts with beads hanging around their necks - not ties.

There has been a major change in what is considered an acceptable dress for men over the last two decades that has casualized society into a ( if I dare say it ) a sloppy state. I recall that about 15 years ago I read in a newspaper that it was OK if a woman wore clothing that revealed the straps to her bra. The fashion world deemed that it was OK for exposing something that was meant to be un-seen. None-the-less, women have always taken much more care of their appearance then men spending fortunes in time and money to have a look that affords the attention that they desire. For the most part men also desire to be as attractive as possible; however it wasn’t long ago that men took greater care in their attire. I guess men have become much more relaxed abandoning suits and neckties - what is now considered too conservative. Up until the last two decades of the past century every man had a few suits and many ties. Now most men have not even one suit and cannot tie a tie to save their life let alone wear one. - Jeffrey

I have looked at the album covers of the Beach Boys and within at least one site aside from Wikipedia. An early photo shows them wearing ties. Album covers from the earliest do not show them in the standard dress attire with ties, although they might be called yuppies for what they wore: Pendletons on one, which were expensive then as now, and others with open collared button downs, and others with crew neck sweaters, etc. You might enjoy the trips on Memory Lane, I suggest you simply go to Wiki and do the discography.

My Pacific Palisades upbringing was surely upper middle class, and we wore ties to dances until the late sixties. Long Hair Rebellion at Pali High was actually LA Times news in 1966.

It seems to me the album cover of Sgt. Pepper (1967?) influenced change and maybe one could make the case for the shift away from ties at about the same time. Beatles were very influential on modes of casual dress and I was part of the group that adopted those changes.

I spent my career in technical efforts in chemistry and did not wear a tie but perhaps a dozen times in 30 yrs. The managers of the efforts did wear ties thru the 90's, and my experience was that by the 2000's only the upper-class, or senior management, felt ties were necessary on a daily basis. I fielded a tie for interviews, presentations to management, and for banquets. My work was not "business" per se.

I used to surf so I have some idea of what is going on here. From the looks of the sky I would say that this is the probably afternoon and the bluffs in the background look like a typical California shore line.

So with that knowledge in mind I can more or less come to the conclusion that this surfer who running towards the surf wearing a suit and necktie for the following reasons

He has just gotten off work another clue why this is probably afternoon and not morning. The surf is really good because if it is afternoon and because this is most likely southern California this would mean that it is the "afternoon glass-off" ( that is when the surf gets really good when the wind dies down and water is smooth like glass ). We know the surf is really good because the surfer is running and there is no time to waste. Certainly the reason why he is still wearing a suit and necktie.

Why does Yogi the Bear wear a necktie?

Finally, why Yogi the Bear wears neckties and Booboo wears a bow tie. It's part a technical and part a fashionable answer.

It seems like a silly thing to think about but actually it is not so stupid of a thought. I was bored about a year ago so I decided to find out why Fred Flintstone wore neckties and entered the question “why does Fred Flintstone wear ties” in a Google search. I was surprised to see page after page of pages that had the same or similar query. So I decided to find out for myself, which became quite a bit of work. Surely the artists at Hana Barara had some reason to have some of their cartoon characters weak ties.

That resulted in an article that was posted on Feb 5 2011 Why does Fred Flintstone wear neckties You'll want to checkout this post after you read this one.

Thanks to someone who left a comment on my blog article about Fred Flintstone wearing neckties I found this Web Page about Yogi the Bear wearing neckties. You'll want to check this video out as no matter what you may think about how silly this really is the video is very interesting and quite informative concerning cartoons and television.  I did promise to continue my research, so this was a great find for me as I never would have figured this out. That promise also included checking into why Yogi the Bear wore a tie, so now I can finalize my Fred Flintstone article which was a speculation on my part. It did not touch the technical issue and probably the real reason for tie wearing cartoon characters.

Apparently the reason these two cartoon characters; Fred Flintstone, and Yogi the Bear, and lets not forget Booboo wear a collar and a tie is a technical one. To create to a cartoon character that moved an spoke with detail was time consumig.  The character bodies has much less movement and detail that changes then the heads and creating the same thing over and over with the only changes to the details of the character faces was a redundant task. This had proved to limit the artistic value of the cartoons due to time and financial budgets.

It was very time consuming and costly for the artists to create characters that had movement details like neccessary for speaking. The creative solution was to marry several different illustrations together, the cartoon character heads, bodies, and the backgrounds.  To conceal the artistic work and any difficulty regarding adding the artwork illustrating the heads to each character body was to add a collar and tie. This saved a great deal of effort and time, not to mention money. This gave way to cartoons that had characters that were more life like, thanks to this method of allowing a solution to create the details that allow the cartoon characters to speak and move as realistically as possible.

Now, one thing comes to mind that warrants something else to be considered here. Yes, the collar is a great way to conceal, in an artistic way the mechanics and any problems concerning the challenge of dropping in an animated cartoon character head that has much more movement than an animated cartoon character body. However that does not answer fully the question why Yogi and Fred wear a necktie but not other cartoon characters like George Jetson. Couldn’t Yogi and Fred have just collars and no ties?

I think that Yogi and Fred need to have an extra accessory, the necktie to add a bit of character and charm to their personalities. After all Fred Flintstone and Yogi the Bear are bit goofy so wearing neckties make them much more sophisticated and easier to appreciate. Isn’t that the reason that men wear neckties in the real world? It is all about respect, a man or a cartoon character who wears a tie sure gets a great deal of that.

Every once in a while I am reminded again of the poor taste in the attire adorned lately, especially by young men. This poor judgement in fashion is either the cause, or the effect of the horrible state that society is in. I do not know what could possibly be the motive or the cause of having such a mindset - that would make a young man wear his pants, or actually not wearing his pants like so blatantly illustrated in the photograph at the left.

If men wore ties like they used to and dressed as if that had an ounce of respect for themselves, let alone others; civilization would certainly be in a greater place. It seems that at this time we have reached an unimaginable lack of sophistication that has a direct connection to the demise of modern man's lack of fashion consciousness. Exposing underwear like this is not a fashion statement - it is a fashion failure and with no question, a complete disregard for common decency.

Whenever someone starts that stupid necktie argument with me the very first thing I counter with is, "and wearing a pair of pants with the waist hanging somewhere closer to the knees then where it is meant to be, thus exposing underwear that are in no way meant to be seen, ( that is why they are called underwear - right ) makes absolutely no sense I guess." If wearing a necktie makes a man feel uncomfortable then what the heck is purpose of showing the world underwear and worse plumbers crack too. It is not sexy, it's rude and it surely spells out loud and very clear, a lack of class and intellegence. That is something that is absolutely impossible to achieve if that same young man were to wear a necktie and as well his pants that way they are meant and designed to be worn.

I just cannot understand so many things now-a-days that I feel so very old and lost and crazy. Maybe it is everyone else that is lost and crazy not me and as well the guys that wear the pants the correct way and also wear neckties.

I found this post about six months ago and should have placed this short intro and a link to it long ago, but the necktie business is very time consuming and there is only so many hours in a day. I really enjoyed reading this especially the first paragraph - certainly the part I have high-lighted in blue text font. Even though he states that men need only a few ties. My theory on that is that no one should ever notice, save your wife, that you have worn a certain tie before. So at least a hundred will suffice to make that possible.

There are dos and don'ts - some of things your father may have forgotten to pass on. It really is like a short version of what I intend to collaborate on - my soon to be New York Times best seller book for sure "Neckties for Dummies." There is some very useful info here, tie knotting videos, understanding what kind of tie is right for you, and some general fashion education for the color or otherwise fashion co-ordination blind.

I especially appreciated his knowledge of necktie knots particularly concerning the "Matrix Merovingian" necktie knot which is actually not a new tie knot at all, just re-named to be superficially correct and cool. It is modified and a reversed version so I guess it deserves to be named after that smooth hustler of deal making, "The Merv" did look great, in his tailored suit with a dynamic necktie knotted so precisely, so daring and in command - at least until he faced Neo and company. There's even a Matrix tie knot video lesson as well so you can be the coolest guy on your block sporting the Matrix Tie Knot. That's one more way to strike up conversation and meet that girl of dreams.

This photo is a bit exagerated but it does get the point across rather nicely. It is funny how the same word with just two extra letters - CASUALTY - takes on a whole new meaning. Becoming the casualty of not being well groomed - the outcome of being casual in attire - which can result in the un-welcome result of losing the faith and respect of peers. Not achieving the full potential of one’s position in career or perhaps not realizing opportunity that is forgiven due to being over looked. In the not so distant past, a man who wanted to really be taken seriously in his carreer and in his life usually wore a suit and necktie. It was simply a way of acheiving distinction. Dressing up for work and when socializing showed respect and as well earned its share of the same.

Music theme ties are for the music lover in all of us, not just musicians.

Would Beethoven ever have worn a music necktie? This hypothetical question could be answered as, yes - well probably would be a better answer. He was a bit of an eccentric, not that it is a bad thing to be a bit of a nut. After all, aren’t all artists eccentric? That's what makes them artists, right? Not that you have to be nuts to wear novelty neckties, you just have to have the right personality and you would need to be comfortable with receiving a lot of attention.

Music neckties could never have been imagined by Beethoven at the end of the 18th century, a little more than 200 years ago, The tie, or cravatte as it was called at the time, was a serious accessory to a man’s attire. Any garment that was customary in that era would not have been designed as novelty themed fashion.

Surely Mozart was no easy act to follow at the turn of the 19th Century in Vienna. Sensational as he was Ludwig van Beethoven did just that. Born in 1770 in Bonn Germany, he became musically recognized as a court musician when he began supporting himself and his family at a very young age do to his father's alcoholism. At twenty years old, a composition of great value while under the tutelage of German composer Christian Gottlob Neefe became cause for his study in Vienna with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Mozart’s death in 1791 prevented this from occurring; however Beethoven went to Vienna and became the student of Austrian composer Joseph Haydn.

He soon became quite popular due to his piano improvising none the less his compositions with the Viennese music publishers. He style of music veered from what many thought to be a refinement of Mozart’s work which afforded him great success with the market for published music, something that had evaded Mozart a decade earlier. In the first decade of the 19th century he illustrated the complete Viennese classical style of symphony, concerto, string quartet, and sonata. His most popular works remembered in modern times evolved from the Symphony number 3 – Erotica, 1803 and Symphony number. 8 – 1812.

The height of his fame was realized in this period however his hearing impairment worsened, a condition that he had first noticed in 1798. He became socially isolated as a result which isolation which resulted in eccentric behavior becoming more apparent. Increasingly avoiding public appearances, 1814 saw his last performance. His difficulty with his love for women who were not within his reach due to their social status or the fact that were married caused him great pain. By 1818 he had become virtually deaf. This and other conflicts he had with family caused him to become a recluse with only a small circle of friends that he valued. His music became less fashionable with the exception of his Symphony Number 9. Although he had fallen from grace his funeral was attended by tens of thousands on March 26th 1827 in Vienna.

Beethoven's Ninth Symphony

In all he composed 9 symphonies, 7 concertos ( 5 for pianos ), 17 string quartets, 32 piano sonatas for cello and piano, an opera, 2 masses, several overtures, and numerous sets of piano variations. He is regarded as the representation of romanticism music style, and the greatest example of the classical style of Vienna. He personified the image of an artist being romantic through his symphonic style of drama.

The passion in his music has won the hearts and appreciation of generation after generation. For those who love Ludwig van Beethoven, or for those who just love music - wearing music ties is a ritual more than like the habit of wearing such a fashion accessory. A necktie, especially a novelty tie illustrates a man’s artistic values and is a clue to his character better than anything else; save possibly having a half shaved head and a rainbow spiked hair doo highlighted with music note tattoos on your forehead. Wearing novelty theme music ties illustrating your love for music is much less severe and certainly a more socially accepted method of expression for sure.

Left off the list of the 75 best dressed men in history by Esquire Magazine.

Its hard to imagine how Esquire Magazine could overlook such a handsome guy, however they did just that. It's possible that they just made a simple mistake.

Jose Brandt is a friend of mine's son and since this photo was taken at Wallmart over one year ago, he has become quite fond of ties. Now, he has several "real" neckties that I have given him. In his collection is an Xmen tie, a Disney Mickey Mouse tie, and a Yogi the Bear tie. He is quite a busy guy so we have not had the time to schedule another photo shoot. I guess his agent will have to impress upon him the value of being included in this blog.

Got the munchies? When a Snickers or a slice of pizza just will not suffice you can eat your necktie. Finally someone came up with the perfect use for ties besides just being a fashion accessory as a form of personal artistic expression. It's not your ordinary run of the mill silk or poly tie that will fill this need. Well, maybe an ordinary tie could serve the same purpose as the “ Edible Reformist Tie,” latest contribution to men’s fashion however a regular necktie may not tastes as sweet and certainly will have no nutritional value. These neckties are actually sweet snacks made of traditional Georgian dried plum puree.

Why anyone would decide to make ties that can be eaten is not the usual brainstorm of an idea. The “Edible Tie” is result of a need to make a political statement by some clever and proud Georgians in Tbilisi that felt a need to answer back to anti-Georgian propaganda in the Russian media. It seems that the Russian media and Russia’s President Dmitry Medvedev and Prime Minister Vladimir Putin are making fun of the fact that Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili nervous chewing of his necktie from a television interview concerning the Georgian - Russia War of 2008 during what he thought was an “off camera.” Referring to the infamous necktie eating Saakashvili, Putin joked that a meeting of Western leaders in Kiev in 2008 should be ”tie-less” as the Georgian president would scarf up the ties of the other leaders. So it is politics and national pride that is actual the brain child of this not-for-wearing necktie.

“Dressed to the nines,” what exactly does it mean?

“Snazzy,” said in not quite a whisper. Often, this is what a man would hear as he entered a club or restaurant. Such was the common the reaction, for a gentleman wearing ties to over hear. For much of the prior century men had a desire to look stylish, wearing suits and ties - especially socially. This was commonly referred to “dressing up.”

Not long ago, a man had a keen sense of fashion that could rival a woman’s awareness of fashion and the desire to dress accordingly. This appreciation of apparel was not just limited to the aesthetic value of clothes alone, but the quality of textiles, fabrication and craftsmanship. Moreover, the value of what a designer’s name meant let alone just the knowledge of who they were and what qualifications they had were as important as the rooster of the starting lineup for the N.Y. Yankees. Today, it seems like men either don’t know who the fashion designers are, or they just don’t care. The acceptance of casual dress in the workplace, partly due to the dotcom era on the 90’s created a severely diminished appreciation of men’s high fashion clothing.

A revolution against neckties had gained support that it became a common ideal to dress in what some men called comfortable clothing. The casual Fridays became casual every-day. In Southern California guys working in stock broker firms would show up for work after the morning surf session in surf baggies, Tee shirts, and salt water still in their hair. Many Car dealerships, even large chains decided that a relaxed appearance was OK, and restaurants that required wait staff, men and women to wear neckties adopted the trend and branded clothing with company logos replaced the tie. What had been the signature apparel of fast food eateries and gas stations became a common look for establishments that had table clothes and reservations only policies. Some of hold outs, even signature restaurants and night clubs in New York City were not requiring a necktie for a man to gain entrance. It was as if what had been a standard rule in Miami Beach would be next in reverse, replacing “No Shirt, No Shoes, No Service,” with,”Come in However You Look.”

God forbid, if the Rainbow Room in New York City atop 30 Rockefeller Plaza on the 70th floor were to shun their "No Necktie - No Entrance" rule - Armageddon could quite possibly be next.  When arriving on the 69th floor the elevator door would open to the entrance to the famous lounge, one floor below the restuarant where it was a wait of several weeks of adavnce reservations for a table. This was where the maitre'd would deliver the bad news to men without neckties. Sadly, I have checked and it is true the Rainbow Room has closed in 2009, another recession casualty. New owners are considering re-openning this iconic New York City Venue, which is perhaps the greatest view of Manhattan, and a beautiful example of Art Deco design. In 1930 the "21" Club openned on West 52nd Street in Manhattan where neckties were required for men to enter.   In January of 2009 the popular restaurtant and lounge ended it's neckwear policy, something that some men could never have imagined. Any man ever visiting New York could get a necktie on the short notice at almost every corner at a kiosk. There was a constant need for ties and as always, entreprenuers would see opportunity.

Neckties surely have lost their way in the maze and confusion of men's fashion, and the very nonchalant manner of modern society. Is the lack of a man's desire to dress with stylishness another indication of the decline of culture or way of life?  At the very least, men's fashion is becoming less than what many would consider as elegant. Interestingly enough the word elegant according to Wikipedia is defined as impossible to define cogently, because the word is vaguely and arbitrarily understood. One man's elegance is another man's nuisance - obviously that would depend on the man and his character. Apparently in the new millennium more and more men are in the opinion that neckties are useless.

In contrast, men wore neckties religiously to work throughout the decades from the turn of the past century, spanning two world wars. Even, men in the blue collar work force were not without their desire to have the distinctive look of character and of serious mind. This would be evident in the fact that non professional men would wear neckties under their coveralls. The professional dress code was suits and ties, although it was hardly enforced attire, rather one that was naturally adhered to. Men just felt the desire to be classy and polished while in employment.

A statement that could easily illustrate how important dress clothes were to men is the fact that everyman owned at least one suit and several neckties. It was a show of respect to dress in a suit and tie and that respect was reciprocal. As if it were at right of becoming an adult young men learned how to tie ties, as if it were a ritual of adolescence. This was not just a tradition realized within society in which its scope was broad encompassing ethnic boundaries; it was more of life style than anything else.

It was a day when men wore ties because they felt elegant and sophisticated by having an appearance of style. Possibly a result of Industrialization, men clothing had become streamlined with flair and panache. Men were expected to be serious about their lives and their way of thinking. Their attitude and character would be perceived in such manner as a reflection of their style, which naturally created great thought in grooming. “If it looks like a gentlemen, and talks like a gentlemen, then it is probably a gentleman.” It was man’s endeavor not to look like a misfit and fall into the category of being a bum. It was a great feeling to being chic. Men were as glamouress as woman were in a time when being a handsome man meant being “dressed to the nines.”

Now, what does “dressed to the nines” mean? Well, now that you ask.

Although there are many different theories about the origin or reference of this cliché here is the actual meaning of the adage “dressed to the nines.”

For the ten year anniversary of the tragedy of Sept 11 the perfect gift for the man in your life is an American Flag Necktie. Patriotic expression could not be more wonderfully exhibited personally with more class and dignity.

Patriotism could not have been more absolute than what Americans and the world realized in the days after 9-11. American flags were displayed proudly everywhere on car antennas, on homes, illustrated on apparel, and as patriotic ties for men. For the American male the American Flag ties became an iconic symbol of what it meant to be a proud American.

The demand for patriotic flag ties were a boom to the necktie manufacturers and retailers that was surely welcomed. Department stores and Specialty retailers selling in kiosks in malls and on the Internet could hardly keep the ties in stock as the desire to wear the “Old Glory” as a novelty necktie became a fashion phenomenon. Pilots and male flight attendants seemed to set the patriotic necktie fashion trend at first, which soon caught on with businessmen, waiters and waitresses and car salesmen.

It was not just the novelty necktie manufacturers that produced the American Flag neckties designs. The designers of Jerry Garcia ties, Electric Neckwear, Eagles Wings, and two of the largest necktie companies in the world; Superba, and Randa also created wonderful themed patriotic ties.

American patriotism became such a fashion statement, whether as a Stars and Stripes Tee Shirt, a scarf, or a flag necktie that is was not since Pearl Harbor that such a heart-felt pride in the U.S.A. been realized. For at least the expression of the spirit of country and the desire to be counted among the free and brave it was as if everyone in the United States was overwhelmed with patriotism. Men, women and children, cars, homes, and businesses proudly had the American Flag displayed with pride in one way or another.

A guy goes into a restaurant/lounge wearing a shirt open at the collar and is met by a bouncer who tells him he must wear a necktie to gain admission. So the guy goes out to his car and he looks around for a necktie and discovers that he just doesn’t have one. He sees a set of jumper cables in his trunk. In desperation he ties these around his neck, manages to fashion a fairly acceptable looking knot and lets the ends dangle free. He goes back to the restaurant and the bouncer carefully looks him over for a few minutes and then says, “Well, OK, I guess you can come in - just don’t start anything.”

Why are these guys so happy? Looking at this fantastic photograph one thing is for sure - these are some really cool guys. It's that uniform look, thanks to the suits and ties they are wearing, and most with shades creating mystique; heck they look like the Blues Brothers or better yet the "Cool Brothers." Whoever said that wearing ties wasn't fun better take a close look at this photograph? This is of course a wedding and the fellas usually wear suits and ties, however this is not just any wedding. This wedding is a very special wedding because I know two of these guys really well. The guy of the far left is my nephew and the guy in the center 5th from the left is my other nephew. He is the groom and since it is he that is reaching higher and more or less at the center of this image, I will go as far as stating that is this perfectly composed photograph.

I know a few things about photography as for most of my life I have been a professional photographer shooting landscapes in Iceland, the US South West, India, New York City, Miami Beach, the Albuquerque Hot Air Balloon Fiesta, and the 92 America's Cup.

I also know a few things about neckties. For some un-known reason the bride and groom did not ask me for the ties for their special day. My feelings were not hurt; to be honest I am not sure that I could have afforded to give them the ties as a gift. Surely I could never have charged them.

Men wearing neckties at weddings is a tradition that is not without cause. When a man commits his love, loyalty, and honor to a women he is reaching a level of sophistication that is unique in several ways. He has decided to settle down and no longer craves the grasp of his youth. There is much to recognize about the formal union of a man and a woman, typically recognized by law, by which they become husband and wife. He surely feels that he has reached a greater level of maturity and is confident of himself and his life. No doubt the groom will feel fortunate to have found a loving mate. When the union of a man and woman is executed by marriage the groom becomes much more responsible and serious about life. He realizes a greater being, especially about his life, family and the desire of prosperity for himself and his mate. Their relationship becomes bound in a spiritual and legal way that is absolute. In all cultures throughout the history of civilization the joining of a man and women in formal marriage has been conducted with a joyous celebration and festivities. Since most people get married once, this event becomes one of the most memorable days in both of their lives and surely the most important day that will define their futures.

With the significance of becoming married it is a traditional that both the bride and the groom dress to the occasion. Naturally as this being the defining day of their lives they'll take great pride in their dress. The bride will plan her special day with great detail and with the help of experts usually every last detail will be planned. Her wedding gown and her bride’s maid will create a presentation that will be a statement of personality with great respect. Naturally the groom will as well execute his attire to suit his character and as well have his best man and ushers comply. With all due respect as a show of his self worth he will wear a suit a necktie to full fill the level of the seriousness of his pledge to a woman as her husband.

Congraduations to a very happy Shane and Danielle Mendler, Uncle Jeffrey.

Nothing else, save the groom wearing a suit and tie will suffice to express such deemed personification. The meaning of marriage is culturally distinct throughout the world and its significance to civilization explicit. Therefore, without question the institution of marriage and the ceremony that formalizes the decision of two people to live together is a testament to value of the necktie.

With that said, here are a few funny notes I made while considering what to write and how this photograph inspired me so. I cannot help but look at the satirical side of what the photograph is telling me. One note of importance the photographer is my twin brother, my hat is off to him on this one. A photograph like this is as timeless as the heavens.

Now, getting back to the point about why these guys are so happy. There are several possible reasons.

Number one: They have been drinking, ( note the glass with orange fluid in it on the seawall, presumably a Screw Driver - vodka and orange juice ).

Number two: They are at a wedding which is always a happy event so they are naturally full of joy and excitement.

Number three: One of them, the groom is very happy because he has found love.

Number four: All of these men are happy because they are excited for the groom, obviously a close friend.

Number five: Some of these men are happy because they are not getting married and they really love being single and the groom will no longer be a threat, competing for babes.

Number six: Since some of them are already married they are just happy for reason number one and two and probably also because they now have another pal that has entered the institution of marriage so they are not going to be feeling as much like the minority now - "another one bites the dust."

Number seven: They are not happy at all and are faking because they had to make the photographer happy so he would stop bugging them. This is most likely not the reason that they look so happy but never-the-less by doing this and by doing it so perfectly they could avoid further wedding photographer harassment

Number eight: My favorite and with no question probably the greatest reason that these young men wearing neckties are so jubilant. It is just that, they are so happy because they are all wearing suits and ties and as a resul they feel like a million dollars.

I have long been aware of the fact that high school basketball coaches demand that student on the team where ties to matches and even to practice. Now I do not mean just basketball neckties, any tie. However, you can imagine that a kid showing up for practice wearing a basketball tie would win over the coach and anyone else like girls for instance.

Another Gorilla Wearing a Tie

Donkey Kong Country Returns: the tie wearing gorilla is back.

Why would a gorilla wear a tie - probably to make himself look more serious

I don't know "donkey" about video games but this was a funny thing to find after my post yesterday about a gorilla that wears a tie vs, an ape with a riffle. You can see that post here A Gorilla Wears Neckties. I had to ask myself, "why would a video game gorilla wear a tie?" So with my interest up high, I did some research and here is the scoop on the fashion conscious Donkey Kong Gorilla who wear neckties.

In this successor to the classic 1994 Super Nintendo game Donkey Kong Country which originally was a Miyamoto character from 1980 the gorilla had to be very special. The man who created Donkey Kong had some specific advice for the people who were making the next Donkey Kong game: "The gorilla better slap the ground properly." Further technical stuff, facts and information on the game can be found on Kotaku.com I do not know if the other gorilla in the original Donkey Kongs wore neckties but I have a feeling I know why this one his wearing a tie. In this day and age of the casual dress code being so popular you would have to admit that a gorilla that wears a tie is not a gorilla to be taken lightly. He means business.

Although, not a real gorilla, just a cartoon gorilla he is wearing a tie like the gorilla in my previous post. The tie has the logo DK on it, obviously for the sake of promoting the video game, Donkey Kong, not because the tie is a Donna Karen tie. Anyway in this new version of the game called Donkey Kong Country Returns the gorilla pounces on frogs while rampaging through the jungle, and swinging on vines through trees devouring bananas. Through a gauntlet of giant Venus fly traps caving in paths, pirate boats shooting cannon balls at him, dodging a giant Octopus's tentacles along the beach Doney Kong is on it.

The charming and debonair gorilla never once seems to be un-sure of himself. He even has a side kick, Diddy Kong but the little guy has no necktie. However wearing a necktie or not both of them are none-the-less fairly formidable looking. I especially like the parts when the gorilla is pounding his chest. At that, he reminded me of stock brokers that I know, they are so arrogant at times and so dam egotistical. This tie wearing gorilla, doesn't play around, he wants his bananas and nothing is going to stop him. Kind of like suave those stock brokers that will stop at nothing in pursuit of their commisions. I will admit, to make sure I used the correct adjective here I looked up the word suave on line. "smoothly though often superficially gracious and sophisticated - suggests a specific ability to deal with others easily and without friction - stresses an ability to deal with ticklish situations tactfully." I would never, ever say the world of fashion is not like a jungle, surely not the fashion world of neckties.

An ape shooting an AK 47 Assault Riffle is not something to laugh at; well at least it's not supposed to be funny, ( video below ). This is a very alarming instance of men and beast interacting with each other. Gauging the advance of evolution is a funny science given all of the variables. Being civilized in the jungle of our world can be a bit complicated given all of the different beliefs in religion and more important, taking into account the greed factor.

If an ape were to get a hold of a loaded AK 47 Riffle what would he think about? Now, what if the ape was given a necktie? Could he tie a tie? Would he wear it and would he become more civil? I believe that we have a testament to the Darwin Theory of evolution here. Certainly this is a monkey see, monkey do thing but what is clearly unique here is that ape becomes very celebratory after he conquers his territory. We live in a very dangerous world. I guess this is proof that being a killer does not take much intelligence. The Ape sure caught on fast as you may note that in the end he is displaying the absolute characteristics of a victorious warrior.

Just imagine if his behavior were changed and he was not being so aggressive but being much more friendly and as well receiving kind gestures and body language in return. I am sure that if the ape were to be handed a tie and given a few short lessons in tying it he would like wearing neckties. In fact he would become quite attached to his new found fashionable look. The added attraction from female apes and the possibility of higher political status he would gain would improve his character substantially. Just considering how elegant his cousin, the gorilla appears in the photo above compared to the chaotic images from the video from YouTube below, the answer is obvious. Soon Yahoo will be tooting the fashion horn, “Gorilla trending neckties sets the jungle fashion world on fire.”

Watch the video below if you have any doubt that the behavior of an ape can become a bit of a problem once he has his grip on a loaded AK 47 Assault Riffle. In a viral ad campaign, producers of the new film "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" released a series of videos showing weapon-wielding apes. Stylized to look like documentary footage out of Africa, one video features a chimp shooting an AK-47 at a group of off-duty soldiers who had been taunting it. Yes those are actors, but that is a real ape and he is surely taking matters into his own hands.

While searching for articles and videos the discuss the diminished use of neckties in today's society I found a real gem. This poem about the financial crisis and the blame that the men of those institutions surely deserve. This modern work by Icelander Hallgrimur Helgason is worth reading but please view the video first - the link is just above and here - Hallgrimur Helgason - "Suit and Tie". Since the men who control the financial machines and those institutions that run economies are them same men who religiously wear neckties I guess it is only natural to resent suits and ties.

Now that there is so much blame and eager fingers to point some people have a problem with the necktie at what it represents - authority and unfortunately with bankers and stock brokers - a blatant character flaw - arrogance. I actually believe that the author really doesn't have a dislike of neckties. Without a necktie you won't have much fun at night in Reykjavik as every night club or restaurant worth a visit will not allow a casually dressed man in. So a popular, and surely very creative poem or rap song, the necktie will still be an important part of and Icelandic man's attire.

The Icelanders are very creative so this wonderful poem or rap is not a surprise to me. The work illustrates the frustration of the trouble that the North Atlantic Island of some 350,000 people has fallen into, a result of the world's economic failure that forced the country of Iceland to declare bankruptcy, the first ever in history.

I have been to Iceland more times than I can remember between the sumer of 1984 and the spring of 1995. I was married to a beautiful Icelandic lady and for those ten years I photographed the beautiful Icelandic unspoiled nature as a pro photographer. Just 6 percent of men wear a necktie to work every day, according to a recent Gallup poll. This news was so shocking that it made the front page of the Wall Street Journal last month. Well, that might be a gasper to Mr. Gallup and fancypants New Yorkers, but out here in the real world, in places like Lancaster County, it's hardly a revelation.

Look around your office. OK, the summer interns are wearing a tie (a very snappy bright-green number on the tall guy). So is your boss (a more subdued blue and tan stripe). But the rest of the fellows? Not so much, unless you work in a law office or bank.

What does the decline of the necktie say about our lives today? Is this a good thing or a bad thing?

John F. Kennedy, the only president of late that had convictions and played straight pool wore neckties and had such style he could make adversaries quiver without drawing a big bad gun. President Obama is not wearing ties like so many other men in or out of government that surely have a problem with credibility. See this ABC News Post about President Obama and his lack of neckties here. Heck, Obama cannot even claim when or where he was born. I am beginning to believe that he is actually from another Galaxy and was planted here from that alien base on the Moon. Just consider those ears, and of course I did find an interesting photograph of him with an alien, that you can check out right here on an early blog post - President Obama Endorced by an Alien. In that blog post you can see that aliens wear ties but at the moment not many ties are tied around the necks of male half of the human species. Well, at least I can say more ties for the rest of us human men. It is ironic now that we necktie aficionados are the non-conformists. Lets not forget the aliens that also wear ties

It is true neckties are not as popular as they once were and they have become part of an anti conformist culture to the extent that neckties are truly hated. It is as if a man’s freedom has to be relinquished if he is to wear a necktie. Maybe the guys that hate ties so much are afraid of strangling themselves by accident, or possibly they were hung in a past life, and just cannot deal with it. More likely, the explanation of the absence of ties gracing the male form is the result of a relaxed society and a somewhat less than serious demeanor concerning the attitude of dressing. This casual lifestyle that started with casual Friday has become a “casual everyday” excepted by society as the norm, giving cause to the guys who decided that wearing ties were a symbol conforming to authority.

Whatever it is, their rebellion against tradition has waged for 10 years or more since the dot com evolution ushered in the relaxed dress code at work, something less than professionalism as we once knew. Unfortunately there are effects that this casual approach is exacting that some see as a decline in the overall character of gentlemen and lifestyle. Even the President does not wear ties every day now which has been noted lately in the press. Now that is the “casual” craze cast in bronze if I did not see it with my own eyes. Maybe the future presidents of the U.S.A. will wear fatigues like Fidel Castro next; we are at the crux of a war against terror, or so they say. Wearing urban camouflaged attire in the White House may suit the propagandists; now that would be some message. After all if what they say is true, we have a lot to be worried about. If in fact, the U.S.A. is up against a lot of people with different ideals, here, over there, in every non American enclave or even not, then civilization is in a very critical balance. It is the justification to invade other countries and even the American home itself with no restraints on what, how, where, and when it is executed. Now, eves dropping, wire tapping, warrantless searches, arrests and imprisoned without charges, etc can be directed – even on us. So far, the guns are not pointed at civilians but sooner or later that may be. So fatigues as the dress code for government officials may not be so crazy of an idea. Now it is unbuttoned shirts and no neckties, nerxt?

For now, the men who make the laws and govern the U.S.A should wear neckties, if not only to make them appear trust worthy with the appearance of credibility, for the sake of tradition. I really do not take much stock in politicians – they are just too much to trust and as always this new president has lied and switched course on every promise he made before election. He has somehow managed to gain support, even if he is a casually dressed guy. None-the-less he should wear a tie everyday so at least his level of seriousness is clear and his influence strong. I guess times have changed but I still wear ties, and I feel a greater sense confidence as unusually of late; I am not competing with much of an equal tie wearing public.

When the Old West posse finally nabbed the varmint who had swiped some chickens from the poor old widow lady’s henhouse, the guys in the posse all yelled “Give him a neck tie!” (They did?) What they meant, of course, was to TIE a rope around his NECK and string him up a tree. Over the decades, that expression has endured, at least in one area of our culture.

Today, whenever a kid asks his mom “What can I give Dad for Father’s Day?”, she is likely to answer (you guessed it) “Give him a necktie!” That prolly won’t work anymore, though, unless the kid’s dad is a minister, a banker, a politician (maybe), a coffin salesman, or a basketball coach (why is that?). For most other men, every day is “casual Friday.”

Ah, the necktie! Whence cometh? Wherefore? And how come? As far as I can figure out from my complicated, exhaustive cravat research, it might well have been Croatian mercenaries in the Thirty Years War (1618-1648) who — for some unclear reason — wore small knotted strips of cloth wrapped around their necks. Somebody in Paris in the fashion game took a look at them and got all excited. Inspired by the Croatian creation, he started a neckwear craze in Europe using similar arrangements of wrap-arounds. So that by the 18th century, high fashion dictated that bands of white muslin be worn outside men’s shirt collars and they were called “stocks.”

Later, in the 1700s, according to my sources, “Young Englishmen returning from Italy (the “macaronis” of Yankee Doodle fame) brought new neckwear fashions (but doesn’t say what they were). Anyway, by well into the 19th century, the necktie had undergone several modifications and improvements, and interest in them became more about how to tie ‘em.

In fact, a bestseller at the time was the how-to book “Neckclothitania,” which described how to tie 14 different cravats, in text and illustrations. And around the mid-1800s, black stocks became more popular than the white ones. I’m sure you’ve seen old photos of famous men of the period like Abraham Lincoln wearing ‘em with a large bow knot tied in front.

From the Lincoln era well into the 20th century, a lot of different neckwear types showed up: the bowtie, four-in-hand, Ascot, cravat, knit, bolo, clip-ons, and even a wide variety of novelties. Especially after World War II, when neckties went bananas. First they got wide — up to 41/2 inches — then narrow to 2 inches — weirdly colored, hand-painted, sexy, and touting schools, teams, products, corporations and organizations of all stripes. Some had photos. Others had mottoes, slogans, adages, jokes, or cartoons.

I was a card-carrying necktie-wearer for many years. So what brought about today’s harangue about neckties? Well, for one thing, their clout is fast disappearing. For decades, no matter how rich you were, you couldn’t get a table at the exclusive “21” Club in Manhattan if you weren’t wearing a necktie with your jacket. Tuxedoed greeter (or not) Chuck Anderson rode herd on who’s goin’ in and who ain’t. If you were otherwise a good paying “member,” you could wear a “loaner” while there. But recently a headline in The New York Times read “Last Bastion for Neckties Throws in the Towel,” with a boo-hoo story about how the present owners of “21” have dumped the necktie requirement, with the comment “So what’s the big deal?” (Jack and Pete Kriendler and Charlie Berns would turn over in their hidden wine cellar if they knew!)

Jackets are still required there, as they are in most of the city’s elegantest eateries. Next thing you know, “21” will be selling off all those great jockey statues in their racing colors out front as “no big deal.” Bah! Humbug! Does every day have to be “casual Friday”? Why, they prolly won’t even allow cigar-smoking at “21” anymore! For Jack, every day is “casual Friday” at The Woodward

Star Wars - seriously, no fooling around, no mistakes or else!

Lord Vader takes his wardrobe quite seriously. Make no mistake about that. What else would you expect from a Sith Lord, anything less than a threatening red striped conservative tie would not suffice. Darth Vader is in command of the entire Imperial Forces throughout the Galaxy. His stature alone personifies absolute respect from the Storm Troopers, and the Imperial Generals the like; along with the dark side of the Force that he has embraced he is absolutely formidable. A necktie of less character would suggest a weakness. For instance, Vader could never wear a Disney Mickey Mouse tie or a Looney Tunes Taz necktie either. Nor could he adorn a music theme necktie, fine art tie, gambling tie or sports novelty tie. When it comes to style he is regimented precisely to be one thing and one thing only – not fun, not half way serious but 100% dead on ruthless.

A red rep striped tie is surely fitting as it matches his light saber and if there is one thing Vader does not want to do, it is to not accessorize correctly. A red tie symbolizes strength and fortitude, an exact way to be threatening. Being taken for a fool is no easy emotion for Sith Lord. Making ill remarks about the Force easily angers him to the point of being hostile and homicidal. Vader has no patience for insubordination or failure so when he dresses, his wardrobe is quite precise. He has the black armor that he religiously wears day in and day out along with his black helmet and his cloak. Just like Fidel Castro, he takes his role very seriously. There is an entire Galaxy to command and the rebels are quite clever at hiding. Throughout the Empire as far away as the Outer Rim what remains of the Jedi must not become embolden. For Vader there is only one thing that matters finishing the task of destroying any hope by eliminating every last Jedi and the pesky rebel alliance.

The Emperor, Vader's master - is rather extremely demanding regarding the responsibilities of being a Sith Lord - keeps a keen sense of matters at hand not to lose perspective or cause. The momentum and schedule of the campaign can never be over looked or disregarded. A long sought after revenge is at hand and there is little time to waste. It is a war and war is hell so Vader gives no quarter, there is no mercy for those who fail him. His demeanor is without fault. However, the photo above suggests that Vader does take some pleasures from the other half of the species. Certainly, the necktie affords him a bit of distinction, and style that the lady just cannot resist. Women, even in Galaxies far, far away, just love men wearing neckties to death. It’s that added polished look that makes him debonair and irresistible. It is one thing to be tall, dark, and handsome ( he is wearing a uniform ), but it is quite another thing to be wearing neckties. He won’t have to bother being persuasive by resorting to his use of the Dark Side of the Force, his rep striped tie will easily win him over, and the lady will become quite affectionate and manageable. At least until she gets the urge to go shopping, and then Vader better have a few credit cards or a grip of cash, because conservative ties nor the Force – Dark Side or not - are no match for a women’s need to shop.

Why I Fired My Secretary

I woke up early, feeling depressed because it was my birthday, and I thought, “I am another year older,” but decided to make this best of it. So I showered and shaved - put on my lucky grey suit, a light blue shirt and a tie that my wife had given me for a birthday present a couple of years earlier - knowing when I went down to breakfast my wife would greet me with a big kiss and say, “Happy birthday, dear.”

All smiles, I went in to breakfast, and there sat my wife reading her newspaper, as usual. She did not say one word. So I got myself a cup of coffee, made some toast and thought to myself, “Oh well, she forgot. The kids will be down in a few minutes, smiling and happy, and they will sing Happy Birthday and have a nice gift for me.”

There I sat, enjoying my coffee, and I waited. Finally, the kids came running into the kitchen yelling, “Give me a slice of toast! I’m late! Where is my coat? I’m going to miss my bus!” Feeling more depressed than ever I left for the office.

When I walked into my office my secretary greeted me with a big smile and a cheerful “Happy Birthday, boss.” She handed me a gift which I could have expected was a conservative striped ties. She then asked if she could get me a cup of coffee. Her remembering my birthday made me feel a whole lot better. I took off the tie that I was wearing and as if to show her my approval of her taste in neckties, I tied that striped tie around my neck, of course in a Windsor necktie knot. When she returned with a cup of coffee, she smiled, noticing that I was wearing the necktie that she had given me as a birthday gift. It was a tonal mix of subtle reds which was a nice contrast to my light blue shirt and grey suit.

Later that morning, my secretary knocked on my office door and said, “Because it’s your birthday, why don’t we have lunch together?” Thinking that it would make me feel better I said, “That’s a good idea.”

So we locked up my office, and since it was my birthday, I said, “Why don’t we drive out of town. And have lunch in the country instead of going to the usual place?” So we drove out of town and went to a little inn and had a couple of martinis and a nice lunch. We started driving back to town, when my secretary said, “Why don’t we go to my place and I will fix you another martini?” It sounded like a good idea because we didn’t have much to do at the office.

So we went to her apartment, and she fixed us some martinis. After a while, she said, “If you will excuse me, I think that I will slip into something more comfortable,” and she left the room. In a few moments she opened her bedroom door and came in with a big birthday cake. Following her were my wife and kids. And there I sat with nothing on but my socks and that tonal red striped conservative striped tie draped across my bare chest which so wonderfully complimented my blushing face with a hue matching my new necktie.

I found this really cool site with lots of great info and a special post called Necktie of the Month. Here is my note worthy comment regarding a fairly conservative necktie, the first post I found, from there it got really interesting. A Bacon necktie and that's not all. Imagine a guy that has the full spectrum of ties; novelty ties, strange neckties, and as I mention below, conservative neckties. He even has Snoopy Ties - I love Peanuts and I really love Snoopy.

But it is not just ties that I found interesting on the blog. Just imagine that your best friend is a librarian and he has tonns of really cool stuff to talk about and in a really articulate way. Although I make a living selling novelty and wild fashion neckties that are mostly collector items I do appreciate all ties as long as they are not ugly. Now, that is a really hard thing because “there is no such thing as an ugly tie, just that some ties are more beautiful than others.”

Actually, if you substitute the word tie and ties for woman and women (respectively) you will have a famous quote once said by a Cuban guy I befriended in Miami in 1993. Renee had a way with words and women. He kind of reminded me of Ricky Ricardo, no kidding - he also wore ties religiously.

Michelangelo's David has a better solution than that stupid fig leaf - wearing a tie.

The Renaissance statue David was created by Michelangelo between 1501 and 1504. The 17 foot tall marble sculpture represents the biblical hero David, a favorite art subject in Florence Italy. The statue was unveiled on the 8th of September 1504 in a public square, outside the Palazzo della Signoria, the government's center in Florence. The statue was moved to the Accademia Gallery in Florence in 1873, and later replaced at the original location by a replica.

A plaster reproduction cast of the statue at the Victoria and Albert Museum has a removable fig leaf that hides David’s groan which was created in response to Queen Victoria’s distaste of the statue's nudity. The leaf is placed prior to Royal visits which hangs on metal posts inserted into the scupture.

Michelangelo's David has become a symbol of culture and an icon of the defense of civil liberties. The statue of David has been reproduced many times, in plaster, imitation marble, fiberglass, alabaster, and as art work. In recent times the likeness of Michelangelo’s David created in graphic illustrations have graced apparel and even novelty neckties.

The photograph above is surely a unique image as David is not only exhibiting neckties, he has a very unusual covering, which serves the same purpose as the infamous fig leaf, only a much more practical one. Wearing art theme neckties such as this Portofino tie, Michelangelo’s David is answering in more fashionable way, how not to offend a Royal - or anyone else that may not take so easily the male nude form. With no question Michelangelo would have protested such an alteration to his sculpture and the indignity of the censoring of his masterpiece. Certainly he would not have been so tolerant of the fact that some people just cannot deal with nudity, blue blood or not!

This could mean a new direction in men’s fashion and a possible fashion trend by opening David's eyes to such wild ties. Here's a guy that I will presume took off his necktie as he is doing something that is a once in a life time thing. I would probably take off my tie as well if I was him. John Edwards in Trouble

him, but he has some bigger problems to worry about.

If you look close you'll see that John Edwards is wearing a suit that is not well tailored or probably from days past when he was a bit slimmer. Regarding his loss in 2008, I think that he would have been a better choice for president for many reasons. Let's face it the current President has pretty much broken every promise he made that got him in the White House.

Unlike the President Obama, John Edwards wears neckties and portrays a serious attitude, which is a really good thing because this guy needs some respect at the moment. He is wearing a navy suit with a white shirt and a blue tie - all of the things necessary for him to get the "good guy" message across. He even brought his daughter as a show of family support. But the one thing he did not do, was to carefully check his appearance in the mirror before leaving for Federal Court and this encounter with the press. You may note that there is a distinct pulling on his jacket at the button and as well there is an "X" stress point in the fit extending across his chest. This makes him look fat - as this jacket is too tight for him. This is a classic mistake that a man can make if he wears a suit that he owned during leaner times.

However, as stated above these problems are the least on his mind. He was indicted for miss-appropriating $925,000.00 trying cover up his mistress affair during his bid for the 2008 presidential election. If he would have got in the White House this problem still may have haunted him but by then he would have had enough clout with the powers that be to avoid all of the fallout that may cost him his freedom.

He has admitted being a bad boy, but denied breaking any laws concerning campaign finance laws in attempts to protect his image and his political career, let alone his bid for the White House. Charged with a six counts of felony he was allowed to remain free but will not be allowed to leave the U.S. while awaiting trial. That will be a costly affair for him, both financially and personally with the possibility of not only having to go to prison but as well losing is license to practice law.

How he got into all of this trouble is no mystery. Men often get caught with thier pants down, especially men of power. A prior post in this blog further explains this further. Why ties have sex appeal and how men get into trouble. One this is for certain, he will need some advice on fashion as he sorely needs a new suit or a new tailor. Most important though is he better not show up in court without wearing a tie as that will surely send a message to the judge that he lacks respect and is not a serious gentleman.

Earlier today I found a blog post that I thought was interesting enough to share. By sheer chance a box with neckties was found from days past causing a very interesting result. Sometimes by accident a fashion preference will find its way back into the hands and heart of someone. Re-discovering what was once an apparel fondness from earlier in a life is quite unique as normally what was once in style will not be considered to be useful, let alone to be admired. For instance in the 80's every man in America had a Members Only jacket, which have long ago be forgotten. I don't think a man today would be caught dead wearing one of those.

Many men, however not slave to fashion like most women, would not be able to except yesterdays fashion statement as functional attire. Not so much that a man may be so conscious about what his appearance may or may not say about him, it is often more or less a habit or regiment that is lost. People do tend to grow out of a look once found comfortable. Any influence of what society excepts now that is foreign from the past is a factor that makes some apparel not a likely fit in a contemporary life style. Not too long ago bald wasn't beautiful and men wore hats to help disguise the loss of it. The phenomenon of the casual trend in men’s attire has all but taken the necktie and buried it. However, down but not out ties are still worn by many men that have the urge to dress with distinction and to be polished with look of success. Wearing ties does take some extra effort, tying them, and yes you cannot wear a T shirt and the shirt must be buttoned all the wat to the collar. I really cannot blame the guys who take casual Friday to mean casual everyday. As the story below illustrates some men are re-visiting the distinguished necktie fashion statement and are wearing ties again. Unlike those Members Only jackets ties have a real usefulness to them and they are certainly not something that is out of fashion, at least not yet.

Here is a story. I moved into a new house back in February and in the process did the general moving thing of packing up all my things, transporting them to a new location, and then unpacking them (this unpacking process is still “in the works”). During the act of packing/unpacking I came to the realization that I own an exceptional number of ties. Looking through them I can trace them from three major sources; ones I bought at thrift stores for various reasons throughout high school and college, ones my dad gave me that he didn’t wear anymore, and ones that I have received as gifts over the years. Anyways, as part of the moving process I was trying to determine what stuff of mine I really wanted to keep, and what I could potentially get rid of. So I was looking at this bunch of ties I had and thinking to myself, “I might only wear one or two of these a year.” So I decided I either needed to get rid of all the excess ties or start wearing them more regularly. I decided with the wearing. For the past couple of months I have been regularly wearing a tie to work two or three times a week.

It is kind of funny to start wearing a tie to work when for nearly the past three years I had never worn one. A lot of people have asked me “what is the occasion?” which makes sense. Today the humble tie tends to be a decorative piece that is reserved for occasions. It is reasonable to assume that over time the tie may end up going the way of men’s hats, fading into the background of necessary male style. I however think that the tie is worth its effort to this day. It displays a bit of professionalism, mixed with some individuality, and an overall sense of class (regardless of any class that I actually possess).

So here’s to you ties, may I wear you all well!

I guess if you feel like a dog on a leash then you have a legitimate complaint, but my guess is that this is an act of affection, not I that I don't care if someone pulls my tie as long as it is a babe - like you have explained. I think that you should re-consider your thoughts on this. It is not such a big a problem for a guy to have his necktie pulled unless another guy is pulling you by your tie, which would certainly lead to fighting. Thus as well it would also mean that you would be getting your butt kicked. That’s because a man cannot fight really effective if he is wearing a tie, especially if the guy that you have to fight already has you under his control which is basically why he probably grasped your necktie in the first place.

I once had some pretty lady pulling my tie in Las Vegas at a bar by mistake. I actually asked her to grab it and then explained that I was more or less her slave. She thought that I was making fun of her but I wasn't. Dam she was pretty..

I did find reference on Wikipedia concerning necktie pulling. A popular prank in England is to pull a guys necktie so that it tightens around his neck. Known as “peanuting or squatknotting," this is usually not to show affection, rather to cause embarrassment, and even at times as a method of bullying. I guess in this case it is not babes pulling the neckties, unless they are big Amazon babes pulling neckties - which would more or less lead to same results as mentioned above regarding a man who is wearing a tie getting into a fight.

For a man; wearing a necktie should be no problem when considering the suffering women deal with when wearing high heels.

About ten years ago the Queen of Sweden, Silvia publicly lambasted men after having heard enough of their complaining about having to wear neckties. She demanded that men should consider how difficult it is for women to have attractive looks. Her argument challenged men to try to understand how difficult a woman’s grooming is every day. She exclaimed that having to wear a necktie was nothing compared to wearing high heels, while negotiating all of the days many challenges, like stairs, standing on trains or buses, etc. More or less she labelled men as whiners when it came to the issue of wearing ties or not.

It is true that in recent times some men have been complaining about wearing ties and that it is such an effort to tie them. The phenomenon of hating ties has become quite ridiculous and absurd as if the tie was a threat to their freedom. Neckties are a very useful fashion accessory for men as wearing a tie is the only way a man can actually express himself artistically, save sporting tattoos. Tattoos will certainly have a completely opposite effect on a man’s appearance that could be easily construed as negative, possibly not a deserving reflection but unavoidable. It really is not such a burden to dress up and wear a suit and tie and the benefits are unique, in their own right. Actually compared to what women have to deal with when dressing; a man’s grooming endeavours are rather minuscule.

Just considering everything women have to contend with regarding thier appearance, save the high heels. There is make-up - a very daunting and time consuming task, leg shaving, having to wear nylons, bras, hair styling, and well you get the picture - women have a really serious enterprise to tackle every day in order to look good. The apparel and the necessary accessories are much more fashion sensitive than men’s apparel let alone the importance of an absolute perfect fit that is almost a science for women. The result of their labor makes them feel as good, and as sexy as they look. They take this special pride in their appearance out of self respect. Moreover, the great lengths they go through are simply so that they are not unnoticed by men. Women take great care and spend a lot of time and money in being gorgeous.

And, of course the added height is a major plus. Women are attracted to men in suits and ties. A man that wears a tie is considered successful by women and well kept. Men dressing up command great reverence. Ties have sex appeal, creating a great desirability by women. Men that wear neckties have a distinctive look. Women consider a man in a suit and tie debonair and most likely romantic. Women tend to go crazy over men who dress up, as a man who is well groomed is exciting and has an interesting gravity about him. The polished well groomed man will fare much better with women than men who are not dressed up as a man in a suit and tie has a distinguished look, with a certain handsome style otherwise hard to achieve.

You have to look at the history of fashion and ties to understand this question. The wearing of neckties has been and still is the definition of distinction of men. More often than not, usually only successful men dress up, as wearing neckties has become a sort of novelty in men´s fashion lately. Therefore it is a valid statement that men wearing neckties is a recognized icon of status. This has more or less been the case with the exception of the middle of the last century when almost all men wore ties. Over the course of history since the Middle Ages ties or neck clothes have been unusual and weird to say the least. I found a really great article on a blog called Sex and Status that sorts this out in both an illustrative and written manner. This is an historical view of how strange ties have evolved to what contemporary ties are today. Every so often I am reminded how difficult my business is. Selling neckties seems to have a stigma to it that is un-equaled. There is a law that may pass to make it illegal for doctors to wear neckties in New York to prevent the spread of germs. And now this very stark post about how it is evil men that wear neckties and that all people should beware. I am not so evil and when I wear ties I sure as hell do not scare anyone. In fact I seem to do rather well when wearing ties. But as you can read for yourself some guys that wear ties are compared to Darth Vader. That is the case for former Vice President Dick Cheney, who is certainly no favorite around here. He sure has made an impact on democracy more precisely the lessening of it, not to mention the ever growing belief that he master minded the 911 attacks.

Yes, it is true some of the guys that wear ties are devious and of very poor character. There are politicians, bankers, lawyers, stock brokers, car salesman, and dare I say even doctors. And specifically as mentioned above, the former Vice President Dick Cheney is a fine example of an evil man that wears ties.

All though the article that follows below is meant as satire it does make sense. In this blog I have mad mention about the many reasons men wear ties and that wearing a necktie will make a man look distinguished creating a sense of trust. So, of course just like an aggressive car salesman a politician can use the necktie as a ruse - disarming those at will. So, now there is one more explanation why some guys hate neckties.

Bryce's Pet Peeve - Wearing Ties

I found this article while surfing the Web a few days ago. An expert in business methods and habits that also applies to managing life, especially for a business person - he explains that wearing ties is all about showing respect; if for only your self respect. The extra care you take in your attire by wearing a tie really says something about your character, and personal style.

Are neckties really such a big deal? The next time you visit your bank just imagine giving your hard earned cash to a teller wearing a T shirt. That would hardly make you comfortable. Wearing ties and dressing up when going out at night to dinner will make a big difference on how you are recieved. The maitre d' will certainly approach you with great regard. The same goes for just about any other meeting or engagement you may have that is of special interest to you.

WEARING TIES

The Wall Street Journal recently ran an article on the decline of men wearing dress ties to work. They quoted a Gallup Poll that said the number of men who wear ties every day to work last year dropped to a record low of 6%. I'm not sure I agree with this number but there is no doubt ties have greatly diminished in the business world. I still put one on when I'm dealing with a customer and I do so as a sign of respect for the other party. Today it seems the only people who wear ties are politicians, newscasters, attorneys, doctors, and corporate executives, all of which do so as a sign of authority. And maybe they're right.

Historically, learning to tie a tie marked a young man's passage to manhood. But I don't think there are a lot of men in the workforce who know how to tie a tie anymore, which I consider a little strange. Most newscasters know how to properly tie a tie, as do attorneys……..

The tie used to be the perfect present for holidays such as Father's Day or Christmas, but most of the time we got a tie we wouldn't be caught dead in. This resulted in closets full of ties we never threw away in fear we might offend someone……..

Now I know a lot of young men will read this and still be adamantly opposed to wearing ties but as I said earlier, it is a sign of respect. If this is of no interest to you, I'm sure you'll continue to wear whatever you want, but for those of you who are interested in making a positive and professional impression, perhaps it’s time to go into the closet and pull out a couple of ties.

Such is my Pet Peeve of the Week.

A Man Flying Wearing A Tie

If you have any doubts that wearing neckties will give you an advantage in life you better look again at this photograph. When I wear ties I feel stronger and have much more confidence than when I am not wearing a tie. Men wearing ties have a certain style about the way they handle them selves. It's that debonair appearance that is hard to match. I guess it makes men super. Faster than a speeding bullet, more powerful than a locomotive, able to leap tall buildings in a single bound, Look, up in the sky! It's a bird! It's a plane! It's Superman! Or maybe just a regular guy wearing a tie, possibly like the guy in the photo above, thanks to some skills using Photoshop.

As for the Man of Steel - Yes, it's Superman, strange visitor from another planet who came to Earth with powers and abilities far beyond those of mortal men. Superman, who can change the course of mighty rivers, bend steel with his bare hands, and who, disguised as Clark Kent, a mild mannered reporter for a great metropolitan newspaper, fights a never-ending battle for truth, justice and the American way. You may want to read my last Post. Super Superman Ties I was born in the mid 50s and Superman was the bomb for me. Maybe it was the adventurous stories of how a regular guy like Clark Kent who wore a suit and necktie could become a hero defeating villains. Watching George Reeves tear off his tie and shirt to reveal his Shield before soaring into the heavens, was something that was a telivision ritual for me that I dared not miss.

Now regarding the advantage factor about wearing ties is another issue that can be argued with great validity. A Hot Rod Flame Tie for Hot Shot Guy Checkout this true story about a guy who bought a tie from me ten years ago, making note of his comment just yesturday. He not only got the job, he got the girl, married her, and started his own company because he wore that tie to a job interview the very next day. I just cannot make this stuff up.

Look up in the sky, it’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s Superman. Superman was the defining point of the super hero action comic genre. In 1940 Macys added Superman to their annual parade exclusive collection of cartoon characters - marking his popularity as an American comic book success. From as early as 1939 everything imaginable has had the Superman Shield illustrated on it making the shield ( “S” magenta and golden emblem ) a fashion symbol. From toys to T shirts to boxer shorts; some, becoming collector items like trading cards, early wooden and metal figures, and the Superman Shield silk necktie by Ralph Marlin. Superman neckties are official collector items as these super hero ties are no longer made. The value of Superman as an apparel license is far reaching, as every kid in America for more than half a century grew up with this role model. The thought that he could be a superman if only to wear a T shirt with the Shield illustrated on it – with a certain such self assurance; surely all of his peers would take note. Superman ties are a natural. An ever lasting impression became realized when Clark Kent would tear his necktie and shirt off revealing his caped uniform and the Superman Shield, ready to save the day.

An American cultural icon, Superman, the world’s first comic book super hero was created by American writer Jerry Siegel and Canadian-American artist Joe Shuster in 1932. At first Superman was visioned as a comic strip, however in 1938 Superman was published in the comic book format. They sold their super hero to Detective Comics in 1938, later called D.C. Comics. The character first appeared in a comic book called Action Comics the summer of 1938 and in 1939 under the name Superman. The success and wide popularity of Superman resulted in radio serials, television programs, films, newspaper comics, and video games.

Superman and Lois Lane

Born on the planet Krypton he was sent to Earth in rocket Ship by his father just before the destruction of Krypton. A farmer and his wife in Kansas he is named Clark Kent and raised with “heartland” moral values. Once discovering his super hero strength he adopts a quest to serve the good of mankind. He can fly defying gravity; his x-ray vision allows him to see through walls, and other super abilities including super strength, making him invulnerable. Only green Krytonite makes him weak with lead being the only thing that can shield him from its harmful radioactivity.

He works inconspicuously as a newspaper reporter, for the Daily Planet, with fellow reporter Lois Lane who becomes his romantic counter-part as both Superman and Clark Kent. The paper’s photographer, Jimmy Olsen becomes Kent’s friend and along with Lois they both are entwined in plots of good against evil scenarios that include Superman rescuing them. To conceal his real identity Clark Kent must somehow mysteriously become absent so he can become Superman. The transformation is accomplished by privately - removing his suit, shirt and necktie often in telephone booth, revealing his bright red, blue and yellow capped outfit with a big “S” shield emblazoned across his chest. Without haste he leaps into flight in order to defend freedom, justice and the American way.

Christopher Reeves as Kent, mild mannered news reporter

After first appearing in newspaper comic strips from 1939 – 1966; and comic books, the adventurous stories were adapted and produced as two films in 1948 and 1950 starring Kirk Alvin as Superman. The television series began in 1952 starring George Reeves who starred in 104 episodes, ending in 1958, which aired well into the following decade. In 1966 a Broadway Musical, “it’s a bird…it’s a plane,...it’s Superman was short-lived - however was reproduced for television in 1975. Starting in 1966 through 1969 Superman was again on television as an animated cartoon series, and from 1973 through 1984 by Hana Babera Superman continued to become ever more popular. From 1988 – 1997 Superman had further television exposure with a four year Warner Brother production Superman the Animated Series that began in 1996.

A return to movie theaters in 1978, Christopher Reeve starred in Superman not only fueled interest that resulted in further movie productions of D.C. Comics Superman and also Batman. The success of Superman as full length feature films also benefited Marvel Comics which has had great success with Spiderman, Iron Man, the Hulk, and XMen, The 1978 release of Superman was followed by three sequels; Superman II in 1980, Superman III in 1983, and Superman IV – The Quest for Peace in 1987. An accident during a horse ridding event left Reeves seriously injured that resulted in him being paralyzed creating a void that would halt further big screen production until 2006 with Superman Begins, starring Brandon Routh. Production of Superman Returns, again starring Brandon Routh will release in the summer of 2012.

The character of Superman was to become the proving ground for many super hero themed stories in comic books, cartoons, television and film. His quest to over-come tyranny was a mythical tradition not unlike Hercules and Samson, making Superman a modern day cult legend. Through the heroic tales, Superman’s pure values and distinction were genuine. The ideal, always striving to achieve good against evil, has had a profound influence socially throughout the world. A young man growing up had his hero to look up to with the assurance that Superman would courageously save the day throughout so many fantastic adventures. Fiction, yes, none-the-less there is an overwhelming connection between Superman and the good in man – that desire to be a “superman” dynamically noble, a gallant hero, and unyielding bravery; surely an inspiration for all.

Since before the turn of the 20th Century retailers had started to notice a trend in shopping that had a profound influence on the fashion design of men’s neckties. Since it was women that buying ties for their husbands; manufactures started producing ties that had flair - vibrant patterns and bold colors. Prior to this ties we more or less mundane in style and design, mostly striped and not in loud, regarding colors, or contrast. Appealing to their sence of color and style was a natural for the designers of neckties.

At only 36 years old, on August 5th 1962, she was found dead of an overdose of sleeping pills – an apparent suicide.
